[ProFootballTalk] – “I still feel like today, if I wanted to come back to football and play football, I could do it, at the age of 55,” Rice told ESPN The Magazine in conjunction with his participation in the annual “Body Issue.” I’m one of those guys that I still believe that if I wanted to, I could come back, catch over 80 balls and really be productive on the field. . . . I think I’m still explosive, and I think I still can beat up on some defenses.”

I hate to break this news to everyone, but Jerry Rice is officially senile. We had a good run with Jerry, but at 55 years old it’s time to stop letting him do interviews. Actually, he can have one more interview. After he lines up in an NFL game this year and we get to watch him try to catch 80 balls in the season. I’d love to see just how explosive one can be at 55 years old.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Jerry Rice is one of the absolute best wide receivers and when he played he was the best wide receiver in the game. But, let’s not get carried away here. We need to start putting these old guys in their place when they come out with asinine statements like this. Yes, Rice is in better shape than 99% of the people in the world, but he’s not getting out there and beating up defenses.

The only person who could get away with this statement is Randy Moss, because he’s an absolute freak. I firmly believe you could still just throw some toss ups in the red zone and let him just outjump everyone. Rice can’t do that therefore Rice can’t beat up defenses and catch over 80 balls. That’s just a fact.
