The Mets Trade Jose Bautista To The Phillies For A Player To Be Named Later Or Cash (Guess Which One The Wilpons Will Choose!)
On the day we hear that the David Wright Era may not be over for the Mets, we find out that the the Jose Bautista Era is officially donezo in Flushing. What a bittersweet couple of hours for Mets fans. There was the time Bautista hit a home run, the other time he hit a home run, the time he hit a walk-off grand slam, and the 800 times he struck out. I know the Phillies have been a pleasant surprise this season, but dealing for two members of the 2018 Mets for your playoff push is a hell of a strategy. OK, that was ugly to my beloved Assman. But there is no denying that bringing in two players from one of the most cursed seasons baseball has ever seen is an interesting move for a team’s juju.
Smitty already blogged this from a Phillies perspective and the only thing I can add from the Mets side of things is I don’t think they will get much. And I don’t mean much in terms of a talented prospect because if you don’t think the Wilpons are taking that straight cash homie back for Bautista and using it for their Labor Day party at whatever summer house David Wright’s pocketed insurance money has gotten them, I have a ponzi investment opportunity with their old friend Bernie just for you. In fact, I am willing to bet that the Mets are going to wait until David comes back for them to check the Cash option of this deal because all of us Mets fans will be distracted crying tears of joy that our prodigal son has returned home. I’m not even mad, I’m impressed. Hopefully the Wilpons invite Sandy Alderson to the party because even though Joey Bats is only hitting .196, my sabermetrics people that the money in this deal should at least pay for the steaks and the booze.
