Soooo Who Wants To Lend Me $15,000

Houston Rockets v Boston Celtics

OK so by “lend” I really meant give. I saw this tweet come across my TL last night and I felt my brain explode. Who says the trading card industry is dead? Imagine being so rich you have the cap space to drop 15K on a goddamn trading card? We aren’t talking about some super rare NBA player like a Jordan rookie card either (is that even valuable?) or anything like that. Jayson Tatum has played 1 NBA season and is already commanding that sort of price. That’s some king shit right there folks. Now I’ll admit, it is a bit sketchy some of the sellers don’t even know how to spell Jayson Tatum, that’s obviously going to be a red flag, but am I just ignorant and this is how it is for every next great NBA star? If you can believe it, a quick search on eBay gave me even more ridiculous prices. Take a look

What the hell is going on around here? Further research of some other young studs literally has me speechless

Maybe I’m the only person on the planet who didn’t realize things were so wild in the trading card world, but you have to be some kind of moron to drop 1M on a Ben Simmons card. I mean I sort of understand why signatures would be expensive, but these figures just don’t make sense to me. Is there someone out there dropping 10s of thousands of dollars in hopes they can one day flip it for a profit? I guess maybe this is like dropping a shit ton of money on art, but we’re talking trading cards and wouldn’t you think something wouldn’t be this valuable until their careers are over and they are in the HOF or something like that? To be this expensive after one year is something I simply cannot comprehend.

Personally I was never big on trading cards growing up, I did used to go to the comic book store in Worcester back in the day to get packs of that baseball dice game where each player had a number value, you had a lineup and would roll the dice for a single, double, triple, strikeout, etc. Can’t remember what it was called but if you know what I’m talking about you remember how awesome that game was. The field was this paper board you unfolded and shit. Great times.

So maybe the joke is on me and this isn’t a shock to any of you reading, but it blew my goddamn mind. I also wouldn’t be opposed to any of you that maybe wanted to chip in and hook me up with the Tatum cards as a signing gift. Just throwing it out there.
