College Kids Not Voting Because They Don't Know How Mail Works Anymore
Damn kids with their new-fangled technology, flashy style & loud music.
Apparently it’s gotten to the point where they’re not voting while they’re away at college and it’s not because they’re too hungover or apathetic or completely and utterly disgusted & disillusioned by current-day politics. It’s because they don’t know how to use snail-mail for their absentee ballots; specifically the ‘where/how to buy stamps’ part.
Via WTOP:
A Fairfax County focus group this summer found many college students who have gotten an absentee ballot simply fail to send it back because a U.S. Postal Service stamp seems to be a foreign concept to them.
“One thing that came up, which I had heard from my own kids but I thought they were just nerdy, was that the students will go through the process of applying for a mail-in absentee ballot, they will fill out the ballot, and then, they don’t know where to get stamps,” Lisa Connors with the Fairfax County Office of Public Affairs said.
“That seems to be like a hump that they can’t get across.”
As an old lady now myself I was taken aback by this at first, but with everything online I can’t remember the last time I used stamps for anything either. Maybe if they made them fun flavors (cheese wiz? ass eatn szn?) & they weren’t just for sending bills these days I’d be more into it. But I have faith in these kids; if they can figure this stuff out they can find those stamps and vote:
