Tis The Season: Week 6 Takeaways

What a weekend in sports. Saturday was stacked. The CFB week 6 wasn’t sexy on paper, but the games didn’t disappoint. And the day was topped off with absolute chaos at UFC 229. (Khabib is such a scumbag).

Anyway, three top 8 teams lost this weekend, which means the doors to the playoff are blown open. We’ll get into the what ifs on today’s recap episode with Dave and Jack Mac, but here are my biggest takeaways from  CFB week 6:

1. Texas is back.

Are they 2006, Vince Young type of way back? No. But how this is the same team that lost to Maryland in Week 1 is head scratching. Tom Herman’s kissing is working. I can’t even hate on what’s going on down in Austin. What. A. Game.

Sam Ehlinger had himself a Saturday. Sure, Texas blew a three touchdown lead in the fourth quarter in what felt like 2 minutes, but it was to Kyler Murray and that explosive offense. It’s not hard to figure out how that would happen. Luckily for the Horns, OU’s defense couldn’t stop shit. (Literally allowed the most points in the RRS history). So, we got to see the birth of a legend: Dicker the Kicker.

Speaking of Kyler, his fumble where he tried to hold himself up with the ball was a monumental mistake. I hate to be extra (who are we kidding), that’s the kind of play on that big of a stage that loses you the Heisman. He had two turnovers that lead to 10 points for Texas. You don’t see Tua making mistakes like that.

The Red River Shootout/Showdown/Rivalry was epic. And this is coming from somebody who loves to hate the Big 12. It was so much fun to watch. But Big 12 defenses still stink. Sorry, it’s true. Mike Stoops is out in Norman because of it.

2. Outside of Bama and Georgia, the SEC is a gigantic question mark.

We saw Dan Mullen’s offensive mind stunt again over #5 LSU. The Gators defense is nothing to play with either. Auburn’s offense is BAD. In their first true road game of the year, the Tigers lost to Mississippi State who had scored a grand total of 13 points in SEC play coming into that game. For some reason, Mark Stoops didn’t utilize Benny Snell in College Station. Free football is not fun if your team is playing, by the way.

So who comes in at #3 behind the Tide and Dawgs right now?

All the feels.

It’s tough to figure out going into Week 7. The SEC: where iron sharpens iron. Unless you’re Alabama and you just kick the shit out of everybody anyway.

3. Notre Dame is zero teams left on it’s schedule that I think will beat them.

I said this last week and some assholes on Twitter mocked it (LOL), but honestly… who is going to beat Notre Dame??? Add in the fact that the Big 12’s playoff hopes may have dropped dramatically this weekend*, if the Irish go 12-0, I think they’re in the playoff.

Ian Book made some mistakes against the Hokies, but they still rolled (and covered. I tried to tell yall it was the lock of the week) in Blacksburg. That’s now three ranked opponents to take an L at the hands of Brian Kelly’s team.

To update, here’s their remaining schedule: Pitt, Navy, Northwestern, FSU, Syracuse and USC. Again, the ’18 versions of these teams shouldn’t scare Ian Book, Dexter Williams and company.

** West Virginia is still undefeated. Will Grier threw three red zone TDs though. It’ll be interesting to see how the Big 12 plays out now that OU went down to Texas.

4. Tua, Heisman ’18.

This kid is unreal. He only played six minutes in the second half and still had 334 yards and four TDs. I mean, holy shit. Oh ya, and he’s had zero turnovers this season and we’re going into week 7.  This offense has had 500+ all six games this season.

This is what Alabama looks like when Nick Saban has the best QB in the country. They’re unstoppable. No, they haven’t played a difficult schedule, sure. But to put this into perspective, Tua currently has a passer rating of 258.4. Baker Mayfield had the best in history at 198.9 last season.

Jesus.

The defense did give up 31 points to Arkansas, but at least that gives Saban something to yell about this week. He needs that tbh.

5. Scott Frost and Chip Kelly are 0-10.

I think that speaks for itself.

6. Sup, UCF?

And your 2018 UCF Knights are ranked in the AP top ten.

I don’t care what anybody says, they didn’t win the National Championship last year. That whole thing is laughable. With that being said, they’re making their case again this year.  You want to talk about a cupcake schedule, UCF has it. However, you can’t ignore the 18 winning streak they’re on. McKenzie Milton is rolling right now.

The biggest question is if they do end up undefeated, will the committee really have to consider them as a playoff team? TBD.

7. Georgia Tech’s troll game is why I love Twitter.

Louisville could do absolutely nothing against the triple-option. The Yellow Jackets had eight touchdowns. EIGHT. And a pick-six. And rushed for nearly 600 yards. And this incredible tweet.

Cold. Blooded.

Happy Monday, folks!
