Wendy's Worker Gets Fired After Putting 'Chubby' On A Customer's Receipt
GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA — A franchise owner of a North Carolina Wendy’s says an employee who called a customer “Chubby” on an order has been fired. News outlets report the Carolina Restaurant Group issued a statement Tuesday that says they apologized to customer Jimmy Shue and terminated the employee, whose identity hasn’t been released. Shue says he went to the Gastonia restaurant this month and ordered two sandwiches, providing the cashier with his name “clear as day.” He says he then noticed the receipt listed his name as “Chubby,” which he says was an attempt to make fun of his weight. He says another employee then hesitantly called out “Chubby” to alert him the order was ready and restaurant patrons laughed. He says he was embarrassed and left, later contacting Wendy’s corporate.
I was on the side of the Wendy’s worker until the part where they called out ‘Chubby’ over the intercom. That was a mean thing to do and it’s even meaner that the people inside the restaurant erupted into laughter. Super fucked up. But up until that point, who cares that they wrote Chubby on the receipt? The question then becomes, was the person chubby? I bet they were. So the worker at Wendy’s was simply using a description of the person who ordered the food so they’d get their food in a timely manner. It’s the same as putting Green Shirt or Glasses Guy or Stupid Hair on the receipt. The Wendy’s worker probably missed the guy’s name and was like, “Shit how can I describe this guy. Oh, he’s chubby’ and just went with it. Again, the calling out Chubby over the intercom was over the line but it was fine up until that point.
By the way, if I’m Chubby in this scenario, no way no how do I call Wendy’s corporate to complain and make it a bigger deal than it already is. This fella was embarrassed when the 8 people inside the Wendy’s laughed at him? Well now the entire internet knows about it and it could get bad. The story is now huge and people are gonna be super mean because that’s the internet. He should’ve instead used this slight as fuel to become not chubby. There’s no better revenge than living well. That’s a thing people say.
