Does This Look Like A Guy Who'd Get Stabbed In Antarctica For Giving Away Spoilers
Snitches get stitches, spoilers get… uh, apparently also stitches.
From the L.A. Times:
A Russian scientist working in Antarctica is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing a colleague for telling him the endings of books he wanted to read.
Sergey Savitsky, an engineer, is accused of stabbing welder Oleg Beloguzov in the chest, the Sun reports. Beloguzov was evacuated to Chile for medical treatment, and his life is reportedly not in danger.
The stabbing took place at Bellingshausen Station, a Russian research station in the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. Savitsky, the alleged attacker, was taken to St. Petersburg and arrested.
The alleged attack was said to be the result of an argument between the two over Beloguzov’s habit of spoiling the endings of books that he’d read from the remote outpost’s library.
It’s a bit understandable to see how someone could fly off the handle over book spoilers when you’re living in cramped, austere conditions in the middle of nowhere.
Russia set the outpost up in the late 1960s as a fuel depot for the Soviet Antarctic fishing fleet & now it’s largely used as a research point with a maximum population of 14 in the winters. The temperature can get as low as -47F but it wasn’t enough to cool off the tensions of confined living for Oleg & Sergey (heyyyo). (You might get this vibe if you can’t stand your roommate but are forced to share a tiny ’60s era dorm room.)
I’d never advocate for violence & think he definitely went waaaay too far, but Sergey’s freak out is a bit understandable. Spoilers to big books & shows make people crazy let alone in that environment.
I asked our resident experts at Lights Camera Pod if they have any experience in the spoilers department.
Kenjac: Game Of Thrones would start at 9PM on HBO go & would immediately become available to stream, so I’d skip the 5 minute intro/recap & then do vague tweets whenever something major happened. I wouldn’t exactly say what, but people a few minutes behind would know something big was coming. Got people pretty mad.
Jeff: I remember when The Force Awakens was released in Britain 24 hours before it came out in the US. Some people in the UK who’d seen it were finding people back here on Twitter who wanted to see it & were deliberately ruining it for them by tweeting spoilers at them. They even tried to get me but luckily not before I’d already seen it.
On my own end I spoiled Santa for several of my cousins back in elementary school, firmly establishing myself as ‘family jerk’ for quite some time. Other than that I don’t think I’ve ever ruined the ending of a book or film or anything. Just not my style. Also, MARLEY TOTALLY DIES AT THE END OF MARLEY AND ME AND IT IS HORRRRRIBLE OH GOD
