Witness One Of The WILDEST Endings To A Football Game You'll Ever See
WP – The football came off Gonzaga quarterback Caleb Williams’s fingertips and hung in the air — past the harsh stadium lights at Catholic University and into the outstretched arms of wide receiver John Marshall in the end zone as time expired. This was the play the No. 2 Eagles had been waiting for: the WCAC championship-winning, history-making, doubter-silencing play in a 46-43 win over No. 1 DeMatha on Sunday. “It was a perfect ball from Caleb, and I just went up there and I got it,” Marshall said. “Thank God.” Marshall’s acrobatic 53-yard catch on a Hail Mary from Williams was the final big moment of a wild Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final, a game in which the teams combined for three touchdowns — and three lead changes — in the final 29 seconds. The grab also clinched Gonzaga’s fourth WCAC title and first since 2002.
Holy emotions. 45 seconds of pure madness, indeed. We’ve all seen last second heroics. We’ve also, albeit rarely, seen last second comeback heroics which is followed by a miracle for the W. However, I can’t recall EVER seeing a last min go ahead TD answered by a miracle kickoff return TD answered by a miracle Hail Mary. Unreal stuff. In the playoffs, no less. Apparently these schools pump out studs on the regular (Notable alumni: Gonzaga – Kris Jenkins, DeMatha- Brian Westbrook) and the QB who chucked the Hail Mary is sophomore Calib Williams who already has offers from Penn State, Michigan, and Alabama. Must be nice to be that good. Must be even nicer to get that lucky. Nobody does it like the WCAC does it, baby! Don’t think nobody plays playoff high school football games on a Sunday night, either, but go WCAC go!
Not sure what you all have in mind for craziest endings to a football game (Immaculate Reception, SKOL, Flutie, etc) but this one from a couple years ago sticks out to me – S/O D-III:
