PSA: Jerry Jones Was 1000% Right About Amari Cooper

Remember when everybody was talking mad shit about the Cowboys giving up a first rounder for Amari Cooper? I do. I sat at HQ and heard the guys on the rundown saying it was ridiculous and way too much to give up.

To be fair, it wasn’t that crazy of a reaction because it did feel like a lot to give up for a former Pro Bowler whose production had been declining in Oakland. But at the time, I felt like it showed that Jerry Jones was trying to better this team and I couldn’t hate that since the Cowboys stunk out loud and it looked like yet another failed season by Jason Garrett and company.

From my blog on 10.22 when the trade happened

“But here’s the thing: I don’t 100% hate it. Why? Jerry is actually doing something to make this team better. I mean, they have to do something. It may be a short term fix, but it’s a fix.”

Fair enough, right?? Except the long term is looking pretty fucking bright too. I can’t see a world where Amari Cooper doesn’t stay in Dallas.

When I went back to read that blog today, I couldn’t help but smile. Jerry knew what he was doing and it’s all vindicated as the Cowboys have pretty much sealed up the NFC East. I’m not normally a huge comment section person, but this one caught my eye:

LOL.

That desperate text the Cowboys sent out trying to get laid at 2 AM (we’ve all been there) ended up turning into taking home a solid 10 and waking up the way kings should (use your imagination). And then it didn’t stop with one night. It changed your whole life for the better.

Shoot. Your. Shot. Because of that “desperate” move – barring some disaster – the Cowboys are heading to the playoffs and could be getting a first round bye. Trust me, I can’t believe it either.

Simply put, Jerry Jones was right to pull the trigger. In six games with the Raiders this season, Amari Cooper had 22 catches for 280 yards and a touchdown. In the six games he’s been with Dallas? 40 catches. 642 yards. Six touchdowns.

His impact is obvious. The offense is wildly more effective. He’s making Dak Prescott better. They’re dangerous on third downs, finally. He’s a consistent big play threat, especially when you have to plan to stop Zeke. He was a game changer in the Thanksgiving day win over Washington. He was a huge factor in the eye-opening W over New Orleans.

And last night, he casually had the best game of his career putting up 217 yards and three touchdowns, including an wild catch in OT to pretty much put the defending Super Bowl champs to sleep for the season.

Best case scenario for Dallas? The Raiders get the 32nd pick. Worst case? A late first rounder. All seems worth it to me.

I still want to see a change at head coach. But I know that’s damn sure not happening anytime soon. I’m going to buckle in and enjoy the ride all while hoping that Jason Garrett doesn’t get extended until 2045. It’s just really hard to not get excited for how this team is playing right now. But I still don’t think they’ll win the Super Bowl this year.

But as I’ve said before… if they do, it’ll be the best tasting crow of all time.
