2019 Golden Globes Predictions

Thumb copy

The Golden Globes are tonight! Surely this is what everyone is excited for and not playoff football. Anyway, we are the movie guys, so this is our job. If you’re planning on betting on the Golden Globes, we have some picks and logic for you to take into consideration.

BestPictureDrama

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘A Star Is Born’
It would be a shock if ‘A Star Is Born’ doesn’t take home Best Picture – Drama. Only ‘BlacKkKlansman’ has a real shot in my eyes, though, for some reason, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association appears to love ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
Could Win: ‘BlacKkKlansman’

KenJac’s Pick: ‘A Star Is Born’
The only real competitor in the category is ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’, but Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut generated way more emotion and buzz this year.
Could Win: ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Lady Gaga, ‘A Star Is Born’
No contest. Next. (For what it is worth, I would have voted for Melissa McCarthy)
Could Win: No one

KenJac’s Pick: Lady Gaga, ‘A Star Is Born’
I’ve been vocal about how I don’t think her performance as an actress was all that great in ‘A Star is Born’. Her singing was incredible, but she never really caught me as much as her co-stars or even the story itself. While Melissa McCarthy definitely deserves the award, Gaga will win it.
Could Win: No one

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Rami Malek, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
This is another toss-up category for the evening’s show. There is no question in my eyes that Bradley Cooper should win the award. He was the best, hands down. But the fact that Cooper might split votes between this category and the Director category, along with the HFPA’s love for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, has me lean towards predicting Rami Malek as the winner.
Could Win: Bradley Cooper, ‘A Star Is Born’

KenJac’s Pick: Bradley Cooper, ‘A Star Is Born’
I don’t feel that any of the other nominees this year had even close to as good of a performance. Being in such a weak class definitely boosts Coopers’ odds to the point of being the favorite here.
Could Win: Willem Dafoe, ‘At Eternity’s Gate’

BestPictureCM

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘Green Book’
This is a two-horse race tonight between ‘Green Book and ‘The Favourite’. The “film community” is in love with ‘The Favourite’ and it’s essentially a toss-up here, but I will favor ‘Green Book’, which is one of my Top 10 Best Movies of 2018.
Could Win: ‘The Favourite’

KenJac’s Pick: Mary Poppins Returns
In my opinion, every other nominated movie was far better than ‘Mary Poppins Returns’. That said, it fits the bill for the category too well, and Emily Blunt’s incredible performance could put it over the edge.
Could Win: ‘The Favourite’

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Olivia Colman, ‘The Favourite’
Another category, another toss-up! Emily Blunt missed out on this award a few years ago for her performance in another Disney musical, ‘Into the Woods’. She deserves the award in my eyes, because stepping into the shoes of Mary Poppins and leaving your mark on the character is no small task. With that said, I think the HFPA is going to give ‘The Favourite’ some love, and this is the category where it will likely happen.
Could Win: Emily Blunt, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

KenJac’s Pick: Emily Blunt, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’
While Elsie Fisher (‘Eighth Grade’) and Olivia Colman (‘The Favourite’) had incredible performances in much better movies, Emily Blunt basically carried ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ from being a forgettable miss of a movie to being entertaining.
Could Win: Olivia Colman, ‘The Favourite’

ACTOR_Comedy

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Christian Bale, ‘Vice’
There are some people who think that Viggo will pull an upset here, but I don’t want to even think about any scenario that involves Bale not winning for his insane portrayal of Dick Cheney in ‘Vice’.
Could Win: Viggo Mortensen, ‘Green Book’

KenJac’s Pick: Christian Bale, ‘Vice’
If Bale doesn’t win, I’ll eat my hat. He was unbelievable as former VP Dick Cheney, completing a full body transformation with a perfect representation of all Cheney’s idiosyncrasies.
Could Win: Viggo Mortensen, ‘Green Book’

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Amy Adams, ‘Vice’
The HFPA loves Amy Adams, so this wasn’t much of a hesitation for me. Rachel Weisz (‘The Favourite’) is deserving of the award too, though, and Regina King (‘If Beale Street Could Talk’) might even be considered the favorite.
Could Win: Regina King, ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’

KenJac’s Pick: Amy Adams
I didn’t think she was particularly great, especially compared to both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone in ‘The Favourite’. She is an award show darling, however, which i think carries her to the finish line.
Could Win: Emma Stone, ‘The Favourite’

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Mahershala Ali, ‘Green Book’
I don’t think anyone in this category will challenge Mahershala, who was amazing in ‘Green Book’ and could have easily nabbed a lead actor nomination for the role. I could see Richard E. Grant (KenJac’s best friend) sneaking in for an upset and, to a lesser extent, Timothee Chalamet having a shot at the award.
Could Win: Richard E. Grant, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’

KenJac’s Pick: Mahershala Ali
Richard E. Grant deserves it, but Ali wins it. No, I’m not biased.

Could Win: Richard E. Grant, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’
I will throw a fit on Twitter if ‘Spider-Verse’ doesn’t win.
Could Win: ‘Incredibles 2’ or ‘Isle of Dogs’

KenJac’s Pick: ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’
If that hunk of shit ‘Isle of Dogs’ wins I will start a riot. This was a unique movie in an oversaturated market of comic book movies that managed to tell an authentic story while looking stunning at the same time.
Could Win: ‘Isle of Dogs’

Foreign

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘Roma’
Stop reading, move to the next category.
Could Win: Nothing else has a shot in hell

KenJac’s Pick: ‘Roma’
No foreign language movie this year has the hype like ‘ROMA’ and for good reason. The Netflix film was stunning, and well deserving of the award.
Could Win: Nothing else, the mortal lock of the night

DIRECTOR

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: Alfonso Cuaron, ‘Roma’
This is a hard category to pick for a few reasons. On one hand, I think this is a great spot to give a nod to Alfonso Cuaron for a movie in ‘Roma’ that will pick up more Oscar buzz than it did with the Globes. With that said, the movie is a shoo-in for Best Picture – Foreign Language. So that would mean Bradley Cooper gets it for ‘A Star Is Born’, right? Well, not quite. There is a theory that Cooper will split votes in the Actor and Director categories. This means I have to side with Cuaron for the win here.
Could Win: Bradley Cooper, ‘A Star Is Born’

KenJac’s Pick: Alfonso Cuaron, ‘Roma’
Say what you want about ‘Roma’, but it was one of the most beautifully shot movies of the year and it paints a beautiful family drama. The master of the long-take will probably win this one.
Could Win: Bradley Cooper, ‘A Star Is Born’

BestScreenplay

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘Vice’
The more I go through these categories, the more I am beginning to think this is the most wide-open Golden Globes in quite some time. ‘Vice’ is the best screenplay of the nominated movies (‘Eighth Grade’ was a huge snub for Bo Burnham) and the HFPA loved the movie during the nomination process, but ‘The Favourite’ is picking up steam as ‘Vice’ cools off following its release.
Could Win: ‘The Favourite’

KenJac’s Pick: ‘Vice’
I’m torn between this and ‘The Favourite’, but I’m fairly confident Dirty Mike wins this one.
Could Win: ‘The Favourite’

BestOriginalScoreGlobesV2

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: ‘First Man
I’m not sure anyone really knows what could win here. Maybe this is where ‘Black Panther’ gets some love on the night? ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ certainly had some nice music? I will go with the former winner in Justin Hurwitz here.
Could Win: ‘The Favourite’

KenJac’s Pick: ‘Black Panther’
While ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ should have been nominated and should have won, the Black Panther score was definitely the most memorable of the year.
Could Win: ‘First Man’

OriginalSong

Jeff D Lowe’s Pick: “Shallow” – Lady Gaga, ‘A Star Is Born’
This is the easiest lock of the night if you’re throwing money down on the award show.
Could Win: Nothing.

KenJac’s Pick: “Shallow” – Lady Gaga, ‘A Star Is Born’
I mean, c’mon. Nothing is even coming close.
Could Win: Nothing else. Bet the bank on this one.
