Old Dominion Making The NCAA Tournament As Its Head Coach Battles Cancer Is The Feel Good Story Of March
Easily the feel good story of March is happening with Old Dominion. In September of last season head coach Jeff Jones announced that his prostate cancer returned. But, because he’s a basketball coach and basketball tough he said fuck it, he’s just going to go out, win at the Carrier Dome and then win C-USA. Who cares that they lost Trey Porter to grad transfer? Who cares that Marquis Goodwin only played 13 games? Jeff Jones certainly doesn’t care that’s for sure.
How about this quote from him too when he announced the cancer was back: “There’s no way I’m going to allow it to change my approach, my commitment. It sure won’t change my desire to win,” Jones said in a statement.
That’s always the awesome thing with this time of the year. We get crazy stories about players and mid-majors and everything like that. We also get just absolute feel good stories like Old Dominion – a team that everyone can get behind now. I mean as long as they aren’t playing Kentucky I’ll be cheering for them. Not to mention, Jones can really coach his ass off and Old Dominion is a damn good defensive team.
As always, fuck cancer.
