Not Satire: Major League Baseball Will Now Reward The Team That Spends The Least In Arbitration With a WWE Style Championship Belt
In a statement, Major League Baseball acknowledged The Belt as “an informal recognition of those club’s salary arbitration departments that did the best.” In its own statement, the players’ association reaffirmed its respect for the process.
“The Association has worked with thousands of players through the salary arbitration process,” Rick Shapiro, the union’s senior advisor to the executive director, said in a statement. “All I will tell you is that players respect the process and take the process very seriously – and rightfully so.”
The divide over the meaning of a plastic prop underscores the tension in the sport’s economic landscape, which has recently become more treacherous for players. Spending limits have been imposed on the draft, and the open market has become a form of purgatory, particularly for veteran players. Led by the Angels’ Mike Trout, a constellation of the game’s brightest stars have chosen to sign multi-year contract extensions to bypass the uncertainty of free agency.
In today’s edition of “Why Major League Baseball is Going To Have a Players’ Strike” we have the MLB giving out an actual WWE style championship belt to teams that spend the lowest amount in arbitration. Yes, you heard me. This is not an article from The Onion. This isn’t satire. This is real life. In a climate where players are fed up about the CBA and everyone is hot and bothered about the cheap owners who want all the money to themselves, here we have teams being rewarded with a real life WWE championship belt. This is one of the crazier things I’ve ever seen. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea? Whoever that is needs to be fired yesterday. Actually that person, or group of people are so dumb they need to be sat down for psychiatric evaluation.
The actual fight over whether the MLBPA is right or not for a strike is going to be the quickest thing ever decided.
Judge: Why do you guys think you’re being treated unfairly?
MLBPA: Ummm, well they give out a WWE Championship belt for the team who spent the least amount in arbitration for their young players. They celebrate being cheap to the players with a trophy.
End of court case. Old CBA immediately lit on fire. It’s almost like they know they’re going to lose, so they’re just having some fun with it at this point. Let’s just piss off EVERYONE! Just when I thought the MLB was making strides with yesterday’s installment of “Twitter Hitter” they go ahead and do this. Unbelievable.
