CHARLIE COYLE WINS IT IN OVERTIME!!! B's TAKE GAME 1!!!
Charlie Coyle scored the game-tying and the game-winning goal to give the Bruins a 1-0 series lead vs. CBJ. After turning the puck over in the 3rd leading to a goal against, Weymouth’s own Coyle redeems himself with two big goals in round two.
The B’s came out absolutely buzzing in the first period. A tripping penalty on Scott Harrington. B’s to the man advantage 3 minutes into the 1st period but it was quickly wiped out by a too many men penalty on the B’s with 43 seconds left. Weird game for the officials. Thought they called a lot of soft penalties both ways. With Charlie Coyle in the box for hooking, Noel Acciari opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal.
Charlie McAvoy started the rush in the defensive end with the pokecheck on Pierre-Luc Dubois, Noel Acciari skated up the ice with Joakim Nordstrom crashing the net, Acciari buries it past Bobrovsky. 1-0 Bruins.
Bruins forecheck was phenomenal in the first. It would’ve been 3-0 B’s if not for Bobrovsky. SOG: 14-4 Bruins, Scoring chances: 11-4 Bruins.
That momentum would not last in the second. Despite an early PP opportunity, Marchand hit crossbar and the Blue Jackets had an easy kill. Columbus finally found their legs in the second and started to push back. They got pucks in deep and were heavy on the forecheck. CBJ couldn’t convert on a PP, and the Bruins got an opportunity of their own with 1:12 left in the second. SOG: 20-14 Bruins.
The Blue Jackets carried their strong play from the 2nd into the 3rd. Charlie Coyle with the turnover at the blue line and Riley Nash gets the redirect to tie the game. Coyle had a good game but you simply cannot skate that into bodies.
13 seconds later CBJ took a 2-1 lead, another deflection off Pierre-Luc Dubois and in.
Nothing Tuukka Rask can do about those deflections. But tough to give up two goals in 13 seconds after you dominated the first half of the game. 2-1 CBJ.
Charlie Coyle absolutely redeems himself with the game-tying goal with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Great cross ice feed from Marcus Johansson. 2-2.
OVERTIME
Who else but Charlie Coyle? Game-tying, game-winning goal in OT. Unbelievable feed from Marcus Johansson. Even better play from Danton Heinen, staying onside. Coyle comes up big with 2G and the Bruins have taken a 1-0 series lead.
FINAL: Boston 4, Columbus 3
News, notes and quotes:
– Noel Acciari opened the scoring with a great shorthanded goal. Charlie McAvoy started the play with a pokecheck from the backend. Joakim Nordstrom crashed the net and Sergei Bobrovsky couldn’t come up with the save.
– This is what happens when the B’s don’t bury their chances. Needed more than a goal to close out Game 1. Could’ve easily had a few in the first period and they wouldn’t have been in this position in the first place. We knew CBJ would have a slow start, missed opportunity to really take it to them.
– Danton Heinen (playing with Marchand and Bergeron) created a bunch of scoring chances, thought he skated real well and was real solid on the forecheck. He’s starting to get more confident and it’s showing in his defensive game as well.
– Charlie Coyle had a mental lapse and a turnover leading to a goal against, but redeemed himself with the game-tying goal late in the 3rd and the OT winner. He has surpassed Brad Marchand’s four goals and now leads the team with FIVE. Great pick up from Don Sweeney, despite the handful of people in my mentions from Minnesota telling me he’s horrible.
– Can’t talk about Charlie Coyle without Marcus Johansson. Two great sharp passes from Mojo led to his goals. They are starting to develop some great chemistry ever since Mojo came back (illness).
- Seth Jones is the real deal. He’s got a great stick and is a monster 1 on 1. Potted 2 assists as well.
– David Pastrnak continued to fight the puck tonight. Not sure what’s going on with him but he just seems off. You hope it’s not injury related, but Bruce is gonna have to figure out ways to get him more involved. Too pass happy on the PPs tonight. Wish he would just let it rip more.
– God awful calls from the officials tonight. Soft calls on both sides. Both teams ended up going 0 for 4 on the PP. Some chances for the B’s on the man advantage but couldn’t convert. Really frustrating. If I’m Cassidy, I put David Krejci back on PP1, they’re missing that net front presence.
– David Krejci was NOT on the ice for OT. He took a hard hit from former Bruin Riley Nash late in the 3rd and did not return. No update yet. Hope he’s ok.
UPDATE: Bruce Cassidy said after the game that David Krejci is not in concussion protocol and he is day to day.
– Brad Marchand and Cam Atkinson were going at it all night. Something to keep an eye on in Game 2.
– Tuukka Rask made some key saves in the first period, and was locked in when CBJ started to push the pace in the second. There was nothing he could do with those deflections. Finished the night with 20 saves.
Game 2 is set for Saturday night at 8 pm.
It was a great night to win a hockey game.
