Now this is what I’m talking about! Free agency doesn’t start for a few months still and we are already off and running with this year’s class getting into the Twitter emoji game. If you follow this league you know that NBA players and their future plans are always surrounded by emojis, and we usually get two instances where every NBA fan is glued to their phone doing nothing but hitting refresh. The first comes at the trade deadline where you’ll get some eye emojis, maybe a watch here and there as the deadline approaches, but it’s some of the most fun you can have on Twitter if you care about the NBA. The other time is once free agency starts on July 1, so the fact that Patrick Beverley is already out here getting things started in the first week of May has me VERY excited for what else may come our way before the floodgates officially open.

The Mav’s have made it no secret that they’re going to be in the point guard market this summer, with Kemba Walker being their #1 target. If you look at some of the the potential point guards on the market:

Kyrie Irving (maybe)

Kemba Walker (unrestricted)

D’Angelo Russell (restricted)

Malcolm Brogdon (restricted)

it’s not crazy to say that Beverley, who is unrestricted, might be the second best option for a team to bring in. All those guys listed will cost you close to the max (minus Brogdon), and I think what we saw this postseason certainly makes Beverley an attractive option for Dallas if they swing and miss on Kemba. You look at their roster now and it’s definitely a position of need with JJ Barea coming back from his torn achilles, Trey Burke Jalen Brunson and an old ass Devin Harris on the roster. I actually love the pairing of Beverley/Luka because it’s not as if Beverley is going to require shots, and if anything he can help pick up any defensive issues Luka has, sort of like how Marcus Smart does with Kyrie.

The other thing to consider is there are rumors that they are also in on Khris Middleton, well not having top spend $30M on a point guard might help them in that area as well.

All I know is this. I LOVE offseason emoji szn because it usually never disappoints. Who could forget everything that went down with the Clippers and DeAndre Jordan and you cannot underestimate the power of social media at a time like this. You need to be on the lookout for who is starting to follow who, who tweets what, it all matters and Patrick Beverley just kicked us off with a bang.
