Unity: Drinking Is Up Around The Globe & The Average Adult's Annual Intake Is Impressive

From USA Today:

Global alcohol use continues to rise, a new study reports, and is expected to keep growing in the years ahead.

In fact, just in the past 27 years, the total volume of alcohol people consumed globally each year increased by 70% – from 5.5 billion gallons in 1990 to 9.4 billion gallons in 2017. That’s a result of increased population along with increased alcohol consumption.

As of 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available, the increase equates to about 1.7 gallons of pure alcohol per year per adult.

This means that an adult averages about one drink a day, whether it’s a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1½ ounces of distilled spirits, the study said.

Looking further into the story, it appears India & China are the countries with the most rapid increase in intake.

It’s almost like there’s some sort of force moving across Asia deleting beers & ripping hoons.

Thinking of my own consumption & doing the math.. if twelve 12oz beers is about a gallon, and the average adult is drinking about 2 gallons per year at around 24 beers total… I am well above & beyond the average.

It’s not that I’m constantly boozing (though it may seem like it on social media where I mostly show the fun times), but a gal can drank. If I had to guess I’d say I’m at around 10 gallons per year? Is that a lot? In my defense 365 days is a lot of days.. 52 weeks at about 5 beers per week is 260 beers, plus & I’m plunking glasses of wine with dinner & holiday cheap champagne sips & all sorts of other adult style drinking in there, too? Wait, am I up to 21 gallons per year now? Let’s just hope I’m bad at math. (I am.)

Curious to know how many gallons everyone else thinks they’re drinking per year so I can see where I’m at & possibly consider a juice cleanse. Feel free to leave your estimate in the comments, or just make fun of me.

Not looking forward to the impending worldwide hangover that’s coming, but in the meantime, cheers.
