Baker Mayfield Says Sam Ehlinger's Opinion On Winning "Doesn't Matter" While Reminding Us Texas Is NOT Back
Nothing gets my juices flowing like a little high school football rivalry. For those of you who don’t know, Baker Mayfield went to Lake Travis and Sam Ehlinger went to Westlake. These are both high school powerhouses in Texas. You all know Mayfield went on to Oklahoma and Ehlinger is currently at Texas, but nothing cuts deep like a reminder of your high school failures.
SOURCE-Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger declared the Longhorns were back after a 28-21 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in January’s Allstate Sugar Bowl. To nobody’s surprise, former Sooner and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield isn’t buying it.
“They said that about Notre Dame a couple years ago…I’m sick of that crap,” Mayfield said in an interview on SportsTalk1400’s The Rush during his Wednesday camp. “He couldn’t even beat Lake Travis, so I don’t really care. His opinion on anything winning [doesn’t matter]. You know, Westlake’s a great program, but the two best quarterbacks to come out of there are Drew Breesand Nick Foles. Sam can stay down there in Texas.
“He couldn’t even beat Lake Travis” is a hell of a blow. Nothing matters more than high school football does in Texas. Ehlinger could go onto win the national championship this year, butttttttt he didn’t beat Lake Travis while at Westlake. That’s something he’ll never get back.
I’m sure you know that Texas has been “back” for about a decade now. However, nobody has been more proud of winning a Sugar Bowl against an unmotivated team than Texas was.
“That’ll stir the pot. He doesn’t like me, and I hope he knows I don’t like him either.”
When I grow up, I want to be just like Baker Mayfield. He’s almost too perfect?
I’m low on Texas this year. I’ll go more into my thoughts on that during my previews in August, but Texas is not a team I see doing well this year. Will they go a Charlie Strong special of 5-7? Of course not, but national championship hopes should be low in Austin this year.
