James Conner Says A Doctor Told Him He Had About A Week Left To Live When He Was Diagnosed With Cancer Back In 2015
CBS- It’s known that Steelers running back James Conner had an uplifting story in his fight against cancer back in college, but new details about the initial diagnosis reveal just how serious the situation was at the time.
Conner joined Michael Seander (hip-hop artist Mike Stud) on his podcast recently and provided some new information about the day in 2015 when he was told he had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. According to Conner, the cancer was caught during tests that were supposed to be helping his knee treatments, as the Pitt star was dealing with a torn MCL at the time. Conner said the doctor said he wouldn’t have survived long if the disease was not found around Thanksgiving of 2015.
“He said you got about a week if you didn’t get this treated,” Conner recalled. “You had about a week, at the rate it was growing.”
Jesus Christ, man. I think we all knew how crazy and ultimately great the James Conner story was when he battled against Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in college after tearing his MCL, was deemed cancer-free 6 months later, put up almost 1400 yards from scrimmage with 20 touchdowns the next season before getting drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft.
But to hear just how grave the situation truly was makes it all the more terrifying and impressive. Dude had give or take 7 days to live according to that doctor before things could have turned tragic. Not quite death’s door, but definitely in the neighborhood if not the driveway. Luckily Conner got diagnosed, the treatment he needed, and is now a starting running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers a year after he rushed for almost 1,000 yards along with almost 500 receiving despite missing 3 games after Lev Bell ghosted the entire season. If that doesn’t inspire you to live the iconic Jimmy V words “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up” or visit a doctor if you aren’t feeling right, I don’t know what to tell you.
As always, #FuckCancer
Also shout out to longtime friend of Barstool Mike Stud for getting Conner to discuss this story on his podcast and maybe saving a life because it causes someone who had no interest in visiting a doctor to get out of the house and get checked up.
And another shout out for Mike being an important part of the still unbelievable rap beef between Portnoy and KFC back in the day.
