The Argentina Women's Basketball Team Had To Forfeit A Game After Bringing The Wrong Jerseys, Get Bounced From Tournament
CBC – Argentina’s women’s basketball team had to forfeit its match against Colombia at the Pan American Games on Wednesday for wearing the wrong uniform colour and can no longer advance to the medal rounds.
The Argentines were supposed to wear white jerseys as the away team but came onto the court in Lima in blue, the same color as Colombia. They had 15 minutes to correct the mistake but couldn’t get the right shirts in time, leading to Colombia being awarded a walkover 20-0 victory.
It’s 2019 and everybody gets offended by everything, so I feel like I should mention that I’m not just writing this blog right now because it’s making fun of women’s basketball. I wrote a pretty similar blog back in February about a DII men’s team that showed up to an away game and forgot all of their uniforms. The only difference was that the other team ended up loaning their other uniforms to that team, and then the team proceeded to beat the shit out of the home team who just so graciously let them borrow those uniforms. But the moral of the story is this it’s a fucking hilarious story either way.
There was nothing more terrifying as a kid growing up playing sports than when you reached into your bag and realized that you forgot to bring something to the game. Maybe it was a jersey, maybe it was a piece of equipment, maybe it was anything. But the moment you realized you forgot something at home, you knew your parents were going to be furious at you for packing your bag like a goddamn idiot. And with that fear being instilled in you as a child, I feel like most people learn how to pack their bag by the time they’re like…11 years old maybe?
I guess they forgot to teach that in Argentina though. Because this isn’t just some little snot-nosed brat bringing the wrong jersey to her game. This is an entire team of adults showing up to the Pan American Games with the wrong uniform, can’t make it back in time with the right uniforms, had to forfeit the game and now can no longer advance to the medal rounds. From what I gather, it’s basically a mini version of the Olympics. So imagine showing up to the Olympics and having your tournament end all because whoever was in charge of bringing the uniforms got a little too drunk the night before, frantically woke up late that morning and in the midst of rushing to get everything to the arena on time they grabbed the wrong jerseys. All time Jimbo right there.
The good news, though, is maybe Argentina can spin zone this. I have no idea if this team was supposed to win a medal or not. But if they weren’t projected to be one of the best teams in the tournament, now they can say the only reason they didn’t make it to the medal rounds was because some jackass forgot to pack their white jerseys. If they had their whites, then who knows? Maybe they could have gone on to win gold. I guess we’ll never find out, but we’ll always have what could have been.
