Errol Spence Jr Versus Shawn Porter Results

No cheesecake and no bullshit tonight… It's late, so here are some quick bullets on the fight:

  • Some early technical difficulties on FOX's part in the undercard, but $75 ultimately gave you admittance into a welterweight slugfest and potential Fight Of The Year.

  • After 12 rounds of toe-to-toe action, Errol Spence Jr took a split decision over Shawn Porter and is now the unified WBC and IBF Welterweight champion of the world.

  • Spence failed miserably in any attempt to control the distance between him and the scrappier Porter, and the bulk of the fight made the majority of the ring space seem unnecessary… You got the feeling they could've held this match in a phone booth.

  • Spence outlanded Porter by a margin of 221 to 172, according to CompuBox, but those 172 punches landed by Shawn were the most absorbed by Errol in any fight of his career.

  • Errol scored the only knockdown after rocking Shawn with a very photogenic short left hook to the jaw in the 11th, and that knockdown was probably the difference on most scorecards.

  • Boxing slo-mos are the fucking best.

  • Danny Garcia left the announcers table and entered the ring after the fight to awkwardly challenge Spence next… But Danny has lost 2 of his last 4 (including the wrong end of a unanimous decision versus Shawn Porter last September), and I think the crowd in LA (and the people watching at home) are more excited over the potential Spence/Pac matchup and eventually Spence/Crawford.

  • Other results from tonight…
David Benavidez def. Anthony Dirrell via ninth-round TKO (corner stoppage)
Mario Barrios def. Baktyr Akhmedov via unanimous decision (114-112, 115-111, 116-111)
Josesito Lopez def. John Molina Jr. via eighth-round TKO

The Main Event didn't start until after midnight, and I think boxing loses eyes because of this.  I had a couple of drinks earlier and had to slap myself awake a couple of times, just to make it to the main.

Another big fight coming up next week when "GGG" Gennadiy Golovkin battles Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight championship at MSG… I will be awake for that one also because I will be in attendance.

Goodnight or perhaps good morning… Enjoy football today… Take a report.
