A French Fry Shortage Could Be Coming To North America And It's Time To Embrace It

SourceIt’s a french fry lover’s worst nightmare: a potato shortage that could hit their wallet and their plate.

Now, it looks like this nightmare could become a reality.

Some potato producers in North America are reporting a cold and wet fall that has negatively impacted crop yields among farmers. This combined with an increased demand for the vegetable has left those in the industry with a tight supply...

...French fries are at a particular risk, Bloomberg adds, as the yield thus far has brought in much smaller potatoes and french-fry companies prefer bigger potatoes for production.

Now don't get me wrong. I think that french fries are delicious. They're also addictive as hell so it makes sense why you end up looking like a fiend by the time you're done and scraping up all the final remaining crumbs you can get your hands on. But let's be real with ourselves right now. For every incredible order of french fries you've had in your life, you have had at least 4 or 5 orders that were just...well...meh.

French fries have had a long, storied career. They are a first ballot Hall of Famer without a doubt. But at some point every great athlete reaches that point in their career where they're just not "the guy" anymore. The gap between them and the rest of the league starts to shrink. There are newcomers who start to takeover and change the game. And I think that's starting to become the case for french fries.

The thing is that french fries have just become so common place that I feel like we all instinctually order them when give the chance to order a side. We look at the menu, figure out what we want to eat, the waiter/waitress asks which side would you like with that, and your brain simply isn't ready for that question so you blurt out that you'll just have the fries. But there are better options on the menu if you just allow yourself to give them a chance. Sides that you don't even need to douse in ketchup to enjoy. Am I saying that we should welcome a world where french fries are no more? Absolutely not. But should we take this opportunity to start ordering some different sides and realizing that most fries are just boring and that you can do better? Absolutely. If anything, I'd say that french fries are like Melo. They're great, sure, but we've also just seen way too much of them. We need a year off from french fries before we can truly learn to appreciate them again.

Now let's make sure that brussels sprouts start to get the respect they deserve in the meantime.
