Devastating News As Edmonton Oiler Colby Cave Dies At 25

The hockey world woke up to heartbreaking, terrible news today. Colby Cave, a 25-year-old Saskatchewan native and member of the Edmonton Oilers organization, passed away overnight after having a brain bleed then a cyst removal earlier this week. He had been in a medically-induced coma since Tuesday.

This is just devastating news to get, a young man realizing his lifelong dream only to have it so cruelly cut short. His wife Emily released a statement via the Oilers.

It is with great sadness to share the news that our Colby Cave passed away early this morning. I (Emily) and both our families are in shock but know our Colby was loved dearly by us, his family and friends, the entire hockey community, and many more. We thank everyone for their prayers during this difficult time.

Cave was an undrafted forward who signed with the Bruins organiziation on April 3, 2015 after playing juniors with the Swift Current Broncos. His hard work and perseverance were rewarded during the '17-'18 season when he was called up by the Bs and played in his first NHL game in addition to two more. Boston called him up again for 20 more games last season and on December 17, 2018, he potted his first NHL goal in Montreal.

A month later, he was claimed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers and played 33 games for them. He opened this season with the Oilers and went back and forth between Edmonton and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

In October, he had a scrap with Martin Pospisil of the Stockton Heat and KO'd him. But what people remembered from the fight was Cave's gesture afterwards when he reached out to Pospisil to make sure he was alright. 

Just a classy gesture indicative of the type of guy Cave was. Unsurprisingly, many of his friends and peers shared their feelings online.
