REVIEW: Netflix's 'Sergio' Is A Far Too Horny Biographical Drama About A Very Serious Man

No, not that Sergio. This movie is about Sérgio Vieira de Mello, a U.N. diplomat who was killed in the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing while serving as Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Iraq. By all accounts, he was an incredible career diplomat who dedicated his life to making the world a better place. In a weird directorial choice, this movie focuses mostly on how horny Sergio was during the final three years of his life. 

Sergio is played by Wagner Moura, who you probably know best as Pablo Escobar in 'Narcos'. Both him and his costar, my love Ana de Armas (Get fucked Carl and Hubbs), are great in their respective roles. The issue with the movie is both it's narrative and out-of-order storytelling. They start at the Canal Hotel Bombing and following rescue. This timeline is interrupted with random flashbacks of de Mellos career and life in the U.N. from before the bombing, before ending on his death. Telling a story non-chronologically is totally fine, but it just had to be done right which is not what happens in this movie. It just feels like any emotional momentum that is built up during a scene gets derailed by a new story every time. Aside from this issue, the movie is just far too horny. 75% of this movie is about Wagner and de Armas talking, flirting, fucking or fighting. It's weird and off putting to me considering how important of a historical figure de Mello was. 

While the bones of a dramatic story about a lifelong humanist are here, this movie is sort of just a whiff. On the plus side, you do get a solid de Armas and Moura sex scene.
