How The Golden Thong Helped Nick Swisher And The Yankees Win A World Series
The Golden Thong has been a part of Yankees folklore for years. Jason Giambi was the first one to use it and consistently relied on it to break out of slumps. Throughout the years, different teammates would try it when they needed an ultimate slump buster. Apparently Derek Jeter used it to break out of his 0-32 slump in 2004 with a home run on the first pitch he saw.
But tales of the golden thong in the Yankees locker room seemed to end after Giambi left the team in 2008. Well, apparently that's not the case. Let's rewind to the 2009 World Series. The series was tied 1-1 and the Yankees headed to Philly for Game 3. Nick Swisher was having a terrible postseason, hitting just .114 (4-35) at that point. He was benched for Game 2 and needed something to break out of it.
Enter the Golden Thong. Swisher hopped on the Short Porch this week and told us that Yankees trainer Steve Donahue gave him the infamous golden thong before Game 3. The magic was real. Swisher went 2-4 with a home run and a double as the Yankees won to take a pivotal 2-1 series lead. The rest is history, as the Yankees went on to win their 27th World Series in six games.
You have to wonder who's on the full list of players to wear the golden thong. Is it still floating around the Yankees locker room today?
