The Boston Marathon Getting Canceled And Going 'Virtual' Sounds Like An Absolute Nightmare

That's it, folks. That's all we have for information on the 2020 "virtual" Boston Marathon. I scoured the marathon website for more details, but there were none. The most useful piece of information on the actual race was on the FAQ page:

(Q) Can I complete the 26.2 miles over multiple days?
(A) Participants are expected to complete the 26.2 marathon distance continuously, on the same day, and not broken up over several days.

There was nothing about how your distance will be tracked or verified. Nothing about how your timing will be tracked or verified. Nothing about any of the sure to be nightmarish logistical details of the "virtual" race. To be honest I don't even know what a "virtual race" is. Do they do it on a treadmill? Do they run on their own then send in their FitBit map to the judges? Can't everyone cheat that way? Who knows?

I suspect about 90% of the 30,000 participants will withdraw and rightfully so. Running a "virtual" Boston Marathon is embarrassing. The entire point of running it in the first place is to get recognition and walk around in one of those goofy moon blankets. Without that why bother? If it were up to me I would've kept the original rescheduled date of September 14th. I'm not an infectious disease expert by ANY stretch of the imagination, but aren't we on the downward trend? September is three months away. I mean this race has been run every year since 1897. It's survived multiple world wars, flu pandemics, depressions, recessions and a whole host of other things that I don't care to research because it's 10:00 PM and I'm tired. I don't know. I guess I'm just mad that it got cancelled in the first place.

I really hope all these safety precautions pay off and in a year's time we're corona-free. As annoyed as I am at this whole situation, I know I have to trust the experts. We all do. We'll get back to normal, it just takes time...
