They're Rebooting 'Twister', Something Nobody Wants

Let me be the first to ask the important question here: why?

Universal Pictures is looking to reboot the classic tentpole “Twister,” and looks to have found a director to weather the storm.

Sources tell Variety that Universal Pictures is developing a reboot of the 1996 blockbuster and is in negotiations with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski to direct.

Frank Marshall will produce the pic and the studio is currently meeting with writers to pen the script.

Plot details are vague on this latest version, but the original film starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who play storm chasers and a couple on the brink of divorce. They team up to chase tornadoes in order to deliver their advance weather alert system that has to be placed in the path of the Twister. (via Variety)

I'm not going to sit here and pretend 'Twister' is cinematic perfection. But it is an awesome disaster movie and the quintessential 1990s summer blockbuster.

I get why they're rebooting it, it has a chance to make a ton of money.

But it also has the chance to make "some" money and also being a steaming pile of dog shit.

What's a recent example of this?

Not only an appalling terrible movie, but it only made double its large $150 million budget at the box office. Not worth it at all, in my opinion.

The director likely being tapped, Joseph Kosinski, is an interesting choice, but I wouldn't say he has a glowing track record. With past movies such as 'Tron: Legacy', 'Oblivion', and 'Only the Brave', is he up to the task? He directed 'Top Gun: Maverick', and we have no idea if that reboot will even be any good!

Lastly, and the point being made currently on the worldwide web, is the fact that two pivotal actors from the movie, Bill Paxton and Philip Seymore Hoffman, are no longer with us. You can very easily reboot a franchise long after actors have passed away, but isn't part of the pull the ability to bring back old characters? Without those charming faces, what the hell is the point? At least they can bring back Helen Hunt if they want to, but, for all we know, this could be a regular reboot without any returnees.

Disaster movies belong to the 1990s. Recent movies of the genre have been…

…bad.

You want to reboot something involving 'Twister'? Get rid of shit like the Jimmy Fallon Ride (???) at Universal Studios and bring back that awesome 'Twister' attraction…

A classic gone forever (same with the 'Jaws' ride).

What do you think about a 'Twister' reboot?
