'Southpaw' Duo Jake Gyllenhaal & Antoine Fuqua Are Teaming Up For A New Thriller
Jake Gyllenhaal will star and Antoine Fuqua will direct The Guilty, a thriller that is based on the Gustav Moller-directed Danish drama Den Skyldige that premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
It takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Bayler (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger—but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.
I haven't seen the original movie that this is based off of, but based off the synopsis, I love this. Fuqua is a master of man vs the world type thriller movies like, well, most of his impressive filmography.
The first place my mind goes to when Jake G and "Thriller" are mentioned in the same sentence is 'Nightcrawler', which is arguably his best performance ever. An even more specific similarity is the fact that they will revolve around 911 dispatch, in a loose sense. Not only is he a great pairing with the genre, but I enjoyed he and Fuqua's collab in 'Southpaw' quite a bit. I'm not sure if I can objectively qualify it as underrated, but I can certainly do so subjectively.
Going off the base synopsis, this seems like an amalgam of 'Phone Booth', 'The Taking Of Pelham 123' and 'The Call'. I don't expect this to be getting Oscar buzz or anything, but I do think this will be a solid, edge-of-your-seat thriller. ROLL THE MUSIC
