Christopher Columbus's Thoughts On A Home Alone Reboot Can Best Be Described As "Fuck You"
The 62-year-old filmmaker, who directed the first two movies starring Macaulay Culkin, told Insider in an interview posted on Thursday, Nov. 12, "Nobody got in touch with me about it," adding, "It's a waste of time as far as I'm concerned."
"What's the point?" he asked. "I'm a firm believer that you don't remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You're not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It's just not going to happen. So why do it? It's like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film—a live-action version of that. What's the point? It's been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original."
Ole Chris definitely has a point here. I think that we, as a collective moviegoing society, have been getting sicker and sicker of the useless remake trend. Personally, I'm always of the opinion that, as long as it is a culturally remarkable property (IE Not Godfather), and you have an original spin to put on it, then go for it. It high risk, high reward. But if you're going to add nothing to the movie at all like that Lion King remake (which I assume is the main culprit Columbus is referencing here), then fuck off.
That said, I think he is a little hypocritical for going after people for chasing the bag as he is an offender in that regard. He is a little cognizant of that, noting as much later on in the interview.
Columbus noted that he could also be "accused" of doing the same thing with Home Alone 2. "That movie is basically a remake of the first Home Alone," he admitted. "Does it need to exist? Yes, because some of those stunts make me laugh really hard, but I just don't believe it should be done."
This guy made 'Pixels'. You know, the Adam Sandler movie where Josh Gad creampies Q*bert? Same guy did 'Rent' and is doing 'The Christmas Chronicles 2' for release later this year.
Another question is where this venom was for Home Alone 3, 4 AND 5. That's right, 'Home Alone 5'. It's real, google it. I actually don't HATE the proposed reboot cast either. So far, it's supposed to have Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, and Archie Yates who was fucking hysterical in 'Jojo Rabbit'
It not supposed to be about the McCallister family at all, featuring on an original story instead. Dude, Chris, this is a win for you. It's either a solid movie that drums up more royalties for your movies, or it's garbage which makes people love and appreciate your movies more.
