Ricky Rubio And Kelly Oubre Both Found Out They Were Traded To The Thunder On Twitter, As Is Tradition In Sports Now
[The Athletic] - Nine and a half years later, Rubio is taking a break at his home in Barcelona. Grampa is playing with Liam, Rubio’s young son, in the next room to give Ricky a breather while he prepares to leave home for Minnesota again. In the span of just two days last week, Rubio found out on Twitter that he was being traded from Phoenix to Oklahoma City, contemplated life on a rebuilding Thunder team and then was presented with, and signed off on, a chance to return to the place his career began and the city that embraced him.
There is a new tradition in sports and that is guys finding out they were traded from Twitter. We got two more entries this past week with Ricky Rubio and Kelly Oubre both finding out they were traded while searching Twitter. Now both found out of their original trade from the Suns to the Thunder on Twitter. Talk about a devastating blow - going from a team that was fighting for a playoff spot to a complete rebuild. Obviously since then both guys ended up elsewhere - Rubio back in Minnesota and Oubre in Golden State.
But I guess that's how it works now. Look at all these guys that have found out they were traded via Twitter that we've blogged about before - I'm sure there are more out there.
Guys like Josh Hart found out he was traded while playing video games and there are a bunch of examples like that. That's gotta be shocking though to just be sitting there minding your own businesses and then a Woj bomb comes in and you see your name on it. I assume it feels a lot like the old days when Dave was hosting radio and you'd get tagged in a tweet from Deke during that time. Your heart stops for a second. Your mind races thinking what the fuck did you do the last day that could have caught Dave's eye and get you yelled at. Not fun.
Gotta be a weird feeling for Oubre working out in Phoenix while everyone looks at him funny. Just gotta be a bottom-1 feeling you're not getting good news. I love that he says he doesn't do social media though except for trade deadlines. (h/t Athletic)
I do social media to help my brands and all that good stuff, but as far as getting on there to just peep, I don’t do that. Obviously around trade deadline time I reload the apps and all that good stuff, and I’m on it.
I need a camera on these guys during trade deadline. We already treat it like a reality show, show me their actual reaction when they are scrolling Twitter and find out they are being sent to a team in rebuild mode. Give me a dead honest reaction instead of the 'well I hope to build something.' Good news is they are both out of Oklahoma City. That's a plus. Takes the sting off of finding out you were traded on Twitter a bit.
