There's A New Tom Petty Documentary Coming Out Featuring Newly Discovered Film From The Original Recording Of "Wildflowers"
UCR - Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free, a new documentary about the late musician, will premiere as a "centerpiece film" during SXSW Online in March.
The festival's site describes Mary Wharton's Somewhere You Feel Free as "an intimate view of a musical icon," drawing from a "newly discovered archive of 16mm film" showing the singer-songwriter at work on 1994's Wildflowers.
SXSW Online, the 28th edition of the SXSW Film Festival, will take place March 16-20 across web, mobile and premium TV viewing platforms.
Been a hell of a past couple years for Tom Petty's Wildflowers.
It received the full treatment remaster/reissue. In terms of deluxe editions its one of the best I've ever seen.
It included unreleased songs, alternative versions, live versions, and home studio recordings. For Petty fans or just general music fans it was a goldmine.
Now more news that previously unknown film has been discovered documenting the making of the famous album that they've constructed into a documentary.
It's well documented that I could sit and watch well-done music documentaries on bands or artists I don't even like for hours and hours. Nevermind legends like Tom Petty. So this will be a must-watch in a few weeks when it drops online and streaming services.
One thing I never realized until recently was that many Petty superfans and fellow music icons, like The Rolling Stones, consider Wildflowers Petty's greatest work. Usually, artists fade as they get older. But it seems Petty was the exception to that rule. Which makes his death in 2017 that much sadder. Even for a guy who lived hard and fast he still had gas in the tank.
