"The Queen's Gambit" - The Musical is In the Works For Broadway

The Queen's Gambit is one of my favorite shows I've watched in the last year. I gave it 9.3 Nateys and was legit sad when it was over. It also sparked a chess revolution, as sales of chess boards went up triple digit percent during the Christmas season.

And now, following the success of the show, there is a musical version in development:

NY Post - Following the surprising success of a television drama about chess, a stage musical of “The Queen’s Gambit” is now in development.

Few details are yet available, but Playbill.com reported on Monday that Level Forward, the production company behind Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” musical, had purchased the rights to Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel, from which the Netflix series was adapted.

It is part Broadway’s ongoing effort to appeal to a wider — and more contemporary — audience, prompting the recent success of nostalgia-grabbing “Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical,” or the groundbreaking “Hamilton,” which combined hip-hop and history on stage.

About 62 million people watched “The Queen’s Gambit” in its first 28 days on Netflix, according to Nielsen.

I'm very here for this. If you haven't watched the show yet, it's not only about chess. It's about drugs, alcohol, sex…and also chess. Shit if they want to sing songs during it, by all means, go right ahead. I'm not the biggest musical guy, but I'll give anything a shot. I saw Mean Girls on Broadway and thought it was one of the best things I ever saw. So Queen's Gambit, step right up, let's see what they can do.
