Matthew McConaughy Says Running for Governor of Texas is 'a True Consideration.' Be a Lot Cooler if He Did.
Source - Matthew McConaughey says he's seriously weighing a gubernatorial run in his home state of Texas.
The "True Detective" actor, who's publicly flirted with a political bid before, went a step further in an episode of Crime Stoppers of Houston's "The Balanced Voice" podcast on Wednesday.
After host and Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious mentioned running for governor in the Lone Star State, McConaughey replied, "It's a true consideration."
Asked how he could carry on life lessons through the next generation, the "Greenlights" author said he has an eye on the future.
"I'm looking into now again, what is my leadership role?" said McConaughey, 51.
"Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What's my category in my next chapter of life that I'm going into?" he added.
This is not the first time Matthew McConaughey has openly discussed running for the Governor of the great state of Texas. He talked about being at least open to the idea in a radio interview sometime around Thanksgiving. And the fact that now, almost four months later, he's doubling down on it should be all the proof we need there is a very good chance of this happening. I mean, if we learned anything from that magical time in American history where one in ever 25 U.S. states was governed by someone who had starred in both "Running Man" and "Predator," the process begins with this exact mating dance. First sheepishly saying you're not ruling it out, followed by saying you'd consider it if the state really needs you, then formally announcing you're running, until finally getting elected because no politician can withstand the relentless onslaught of your charisma.
And I'll say what I said back in November. I don't know why McConaughey would be interested. Why take such a huge step back in power and prestige? When you've spend decades as the king of all you survey as he has, what's the appeal of being a mere governor? Right now he can get anything he wants. Any role. Work with any director. Get any project he wants greenlit just by attaching his name to it. He can swing invites to any event. Get a private box at a U. of Texas game or hang on the sidelines or be an honorary team captain if he so desires. Why would any man in his position want to have to negotiate with a bunch of legislators over some appropriations bill or lock horns with some mayor over some obscure policy difference, when he could be drinking the finest whiskey at Sundance and just being universally celebrated wherever he goes?
The only reason I can come up with is that he's mastered the art of being an actor and a professional celebrity and he's bored with it. "When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept. For there were no more worlds left to conquer" and all that. In the same way that Daniel Day Lewis perfected the art of being a movie star, so he retired back to the UK to bake sourdough bread. Once you've done Season 1 of "True Detective," what else is there, I guess?
But again I'll say, I don't think McConaughey needs to be just a governor. That's slumming. When he gets elected - and who'd bet against him? - there'd be 49 more where he came from. None of them his equal. There's only one job worthy of his stature, and that's sitting behind the Resolute Desk. Commander in Chief. Sworn Protector and Defender of the Constitution. In charge of the nuclear codes. The guy who throws out the first pitch at the Nationals Opening Day, hosts the championship teams, pardons the turkey and runs the Easter Egg Hunt on the South Lawn.
If anyone could unite this fractured nation, he could. No one is better equipped to encourage our allies, while discouraging and winning over our enemies. So let's just cut to the chase. Skip the entry level stuff and the resume building and just announce you're running for the White House.
