John Mayer Just Dropped His New Album "Sob Rock", Let's Break It Down

See everyone at the UC on 4/28/2022!!!

If you know anything at all about me, it's that you know I have an unhealthy obsessions of John Mayer, both the musician/music he makes and the dude himself. All time cocksman who has a great sense of humor but is an otherworldly guitarist at the same time. Shit talk me if you must. I don't give a single fuck.

Well he just dropped a new album titled "Sob Rock". I've given it a few listens and here's my take: it's okay. It still might take me a few more listens to really fall in love with it, but I didn't give it one listen and say, "this is incredible". That's not a bad thing, but it's rare for me personally to say anything at all is incredible after one listen or watch. The last album I did that with was Weezer's "OK Human"

Here's the Spotify track list:

I also hold John Mayer to an incredibly high standard. If this were just some schmuck I stumbled upon on Spotify, perhaps I'd be like, "holy shit this guy's good". Sob Rock just didn't hit me like a lot of his earlier albums did. Maybe it's because I'm not a menopausal cougar and I don't cry when listening to music. Maybe it's because I think Born and Raised is peak John Mayer and I subconsciously haven't been able to get there with his later albums. I don't know. It is what it is, at least right now. Good, not great.

All of that said, it's absolutely worth the listen. A few of the songs on the album that had previously been released as singles are "Last Train Home", "New Light" and "I Guess I Just Feel Like". I can do with or without the former two songs, but "I Guess I Just Feel Like", to me, is really, really good.

As for the new releases off this album? Wild Blue is awesome and there's a really good guitar solo in it (shocker) that has a few vibes of "Crazy On You" by Heart.

That was the one song that I added to my main playlist.

The album as a whole was just good, quality listening, but didn't reach the "I'm going to play this on repeat" level a lot of his older albums did for me. I think you'll like it, I don't think you'll love it… and that's fine.

JOHN ALBUM ALBUMS RANKED

5. Heavier Things --- "Daughters" is just incredible
4. Battle Studies --- "Perfectly lonely" one of his best songs ever
3. Room For Squares --- "Why Georgia"… 'nuff said
2. Continuum --- the "chalk" pick, just an all time great album, his cover of Jimi's "Bold as Love" is un-fucking-believable
1. Born and Raised --- This is MY favorite John Mayer and I know that's not the popular take. I LOVE how he said fuck it and went to an acoustic/folksy style for that album. "Born and Raised" (the song) is my favorite John Mayer song of all time gets me all up in my feels

PS - we're going to talk about this album a LOT on my music podcast next week. I've mentioned it a little bit here and there, but I host a show with Colin Budny of Philly band "Foxtrot and the Get Down" and Kenny Carkeet, a founding member of Awolnation. Yesterday I described those two guys as having a PHD in music. I don't mean this to jerk myself off, but it's a really good show. Just recorded with Chris Dos of AntiFlag yesterday and have had a TON of big name guests. Cory Wong, Chris Shifflet of the Foo Fighters, Duddy B of the Dirty Heads, David Shaw of The Revivalists, Andy Frasco, Matthew Koma and more. Check it out:
