1. The Tinder Swindler - Netflix:
A group of women who were the victims of a dating app based swindler join together in an attempt to hunt him down and recover the millions of dollars that were stolen from them.
2. I Love You Man - 86/100 - Netflix:
Peter Klaven is a successful real estate agent who, upon getting engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey, discovers, to his dismay and chagrin, that he has no male friend close enough to serve as his Best Man. Peter immediately sets out to rectify the situation, embarking on a series of bizarre and awkward "man-dates."
This movie is not part of the Judd Apatow sphere of movies at all, but I still count it as one of my favorite Apatow movies ever. Is that fair? Does it make sense? No. Nevertheless, it is a hilarious movie that still holds up extremely well. I recently rewatched and forgot how funny it was when Paul Rudd's coworker referred to M. Night Shyamalan as "The director of 'The village'"
3. The Patriot - 84/100 - Netflix:
After proving himself on the field of battle in the French and Indian War, Benjamin Martin wants nothing more to do with such things, preferring the simple life of a farmer. But when his son Gabriel enlists in the army to defend their new nation, America, against the British, Benjamin reluctantly returns to his old life to protect his son.
Aim small, miss small. I rewatched this movie recently as well to help get the bad taste of Emmerich's newest movie, 'Moonfall' out of my mouth. There are a lot of great things about The Patriot, but I think my favorite is Jason Isaacs. Probably one of my top-5 villains of all time.
4. Unforgiven - 92/100 - HBO Max:
William Munny is a retired, once-ruthless killer turned gentle widower and hog farmer. To help support his two motherless children, he accepts one last bounty-hunter mission to find the men who brutalized a prostitute. Joined by his former partner and a cocky greenhorn, he takes on a corrupt sheriff.
We recently interviewed Clint Eastwood's son, Scott, and he said that he believes it is the greatest western of all time. Honestly, I don't blame him for thinking that at all. Clint fucking rocks in this movie, and it has everything you could want out of a newer western as well as everything to love about an older one.
5. My Cousin Vinny - 90/100 - HBO Max:
Two carefree pals traveling through Alabama are mistakenly arrested, and charged with murder. Fortunately, one of them has a cousin who's a lawyer - Vincent Gambini, a former auto mechanic from Brooklyn who just passed his bar exam after his sixth try. When he arrives with his leather-clad girlfriend , to try his first case, it's a real shock - for him and the Deep South!
I don't need to pitch you on this. It is one of those movies that that isn't going to be considered must-watch by critics or whatever, but I think it's about as must-watch as any movie I could think of.
6. Nobody - 90/100 - HBO Max:
Hutch Mansell, a suburban dad, overlooked husband, nothing neighbor — a "nobody." When two thieves break into his home one night, Hutch's unknown long-simmering rage is ignited and propels him on a brutal path that will uncover dark secrets he fought to leave behind.
I remember watching this trailer and thinking "How the fuck do they plan on turning Bob Odenkirk in to John Wick?". But god damn it did it work for this movie. It's a combination of Wick with an adult Home Alone, and I think it was a more compelling villain away from being on the level of a Wick movie.
7. Logan Lucky - 94/100 - Hulu:
Trying to reverse a family curse, brothers Jimmy and Clyde Logan set out to execute an elaborate robbery during the legendary Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
If you are looking for a heist movie, it's hard to find a recent one that is better than Logan Lucky. Great heist action, hysterical lines, and really good acting all around.
8. Three Days of the Condor - 94/100 - Hulu:
A bookish CIA researcher finds all his co-workers dead, and must outwit those responsible until he figures out who he can really trust.
One of the great OG spy movies, this is a classic that I would recommend to anyone. A really awesome espionage story that serves as inspiration for a lot of spy movies that you know and love.
9. Blow the Man Down - 90/100 - Prime Video:
While grieving for the loss of their mother, the Connolly sisters suddenly find they have a crime to cover up, leading them deep into the underbelly of their salty Maine fishing village.
This is a smaller movie, but it made a huge impact. It crosses through a few genres including crime mystery, drama, noir, and more and does all of them fairly well.
10. I Saw the Devil - 90/100 - Prime Video:
Kyung-chul is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. He has committed infernal serial murders in diabolic ways that one cannot even imagine and his victims range from young women to even children. The police have chased him for a long time, but were unable to catch him. One day, Joo-yeon, daughter of a retired police chief becomes his prey and is found dead in a horrific state. Her fiance Soo-hyun, a top secret agent, decides to track down the murderer himself. He promises himself that he will do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself to get this monstrous and inhumane killer.
This movie will fuck you up. It's about as dark, gory and scary of a thriller as you will ever find. This guy sets out to get the type of revenge that other movie characters could only dream of getting.
SHOWS
1. Peacemaker - HBO Max: Most of you already started this series and know that it is THE series to watch right now. Great action, amazing humor and killer music. What more could you want out of a superhero series? Actually, it's not REALLY a superhero series since nobody really has superpowers. Those who do get openly mocked in this show.
2. Pam & Tommy - Hulu+: A really weird, hardcore telling that dives into the seediness of the celeb sex tape world. Stan and James are perfect as Pam & Tommy, and Seth Rogen is also perfectly complicated. The show also doesn't shy away from nudity, which I was a little concerned about. Director Craig Gillespie(I Tonya, Cruella) does a great job weaving music from the time period into the show as well, just like he does in all his work.
3. Black Sails- Hulu: This show has a pretty interesting history. A group of voice actors ran a web series called Critical Role, where they would play Dungeons and Dragons. It was very popular, and they decided to open a kickstarter to try and make an animated special. It made $1 Million within an hour of opening, and ended up raising $11,385,449 with 88,887 backers. That made it the most funded TV/Movie kickstarter in HISTORY. Amazon later bought the rights which is why it's on Prime.
Anyway, I like the show quite a bit so far. I never played D&D, but I've always been aware of it's influence on RPG properties that I have enjoyed. There are probably references to the game that I don't pick up on, but I never noticed anything that felt like a roadblock in me enjoying the show. It's funny, weird and violent which I like in a cartoon series. It almost reminds me of another Prime Video animated series, 'Invincible', in how it looks and the core mystery of the show.
