Chiclets Concierge: Biz's Nightmare... An All Buffalo Blog With One EBR Winner!!!
Just like the song goes “ I have been everywhere man, I have been everywhere!!” and I am going to pass this knowledge on to the great fans of Barstool by using experiences. But let us be serious, this blog is mostly about winning money. We will give you a bet on the local team that will make you money and add fun facts about some of the great cities around the world. For all the stat people in the crowd, I have played in 18 countries and have been to 33 total.
Biz may not like Buffalo, but I love it after spending a lot of time there whether it be when I was a youth hockey player or when my buddy Tim Connolly played there for all those years. I’d always go for the summer to skate with the Sabres and drink with them at Mickey Rats and The Sunset on the weekends. When my career switched to Europe I would catch up with them in the spring for their playoff runs and nights out on Chippewa. Now that the Chiclets Cup is slated for July 22-23 in the great city of Buffalo, it is time the Chiclets Concierge covered this belligerent city. We will take you down the famed Chippewa Street to a few of our favorite bars and uncover the local's spots for the best food around the city.
Location:
Buffalo, New York
Team Local Watering Hole Of Choice:
Rec Room - This place has it all, dueling pianos one night, live band karaoke another, and Saturday nights with a DJ and Bottle Service. The bar is located on the famed Chippewa st. that is packed every weekend. Everyone please be aware and make sure Grinnell isn't in charge of making the order again but maybe we can get the Whit up on stage to sing us a few tunes. Watch out for Dale the owner he is a complete menace when he jumps behind the bar.
Best Buffalo Wings:
Bar Bill Tavern North - A 20-minute drive from downtown, but if you want the best wings in all of Buffalo the trip must be made. Now I am a traditionalist when it comes to wingy, so I always order 10 medium-hot with 2 blue cheeses and a tall draft of Labatt Blue Light.
Best Buffalo Wing Sub Sandwich:
Elmwood Tacos and Subs - Located just north of downtown in another bar district on Elmwood Ave. and the buffalo wing sub is a must every time I go through the city. For the next two weeks, you can ask for Taco Mike and mention this blog and he’ll take care of you with a free soda!
Drink up and Enjoy:
Crown Royal - I’ve never seen a city more obsessed with a certain type of Alcohol than the city of Buffalo and Crown. Find your way to the bar and ask someone if they want a shot 10/10 times they will say Crown and this is fact no matter on the gender. The city has been like this forever, but I’m pretty sure after the Chiclets Cup weekend Pink Whitney will be giving it a run for the title. A shot of Crown chilled is the way to go.
Late Night Eats:
Jim’s Steak-out - There are 10 locations around town, but there’s a 99% chance you will be hitting the one on Chippewa street around 4:05 am after you stumble out of the bar. This spot is known for its subs but make sure to add a couple of tacos and the onion rings to the order, secretly the two best items on the menu. One former Sabres player was known for taking down 2 Stingers after the bar every time he was out on the town. A stinger is the best of both worlds combining a regular cheesesteak and a buffalo chicken tender together in one sub.
Local Team:
Buffalo Sabres - The team was founded in 1970 when the NHL expanded to 14 teams. They have made it to two Stanley Cup finals in 1975 and 1999 losing both times as the city of Buffalo is still waiting for a championship. This city when the Sabres are in the playoffs and the fans gather downtown to watch the games is like no other.
Legendary Alumni: Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, René Robert, Lindy Ruff, Jim Lorentz, Dave Andreychuk, Dale Hawerchuk, Derek Smith, Dominik Hasek, Pat LaFontaine, Darren Puppa, Tim Connolly, Tyler Ennis, Clarke MacArthur, Ryan Miller, Nathan Paetsch, Rob Ray, Brian Gionta, Alexander Mogilny, Chris Drury, and recent Spittin Chiclets guest Craig Rivet.
Arena:
KeyBank Center - Capacity 19,200 - Located right downtown on the Buffalo River a 20-minute walk from the bars and hotels on Chippewa street. If you find yourself in need of a beer before or after the game the legendary Cobblestone Bar and Grill is located right around the corner.
Murls’ Best Bet:
Buffalo Sabres Money-line -134 Barstool Sportsbook
*When this hits big I expect to see some $EBR crew jumping through tables on their way to the cashier!
Bonus Places to Eat:
Chefs Italian - Sabres players pregame meal spot and the order is always without a doubt the chicken par and ask for the side of spaghetti to be "parmed" as well.
LaNova Pizza - Order a sheet pizza with pepperoni. Sicilian style with mini pepperonis that always shows up perfectly crisped.
Ted’s Hot Dogs - Couple foot long dogs prepared on the grill right in front of you was always amazing to see as a youngster. These dogs will be at the top of the list for Frank the Tank when he makes his trip to Buffalo for Raw Dogs.
