"EVACUATE NOW, AIRCRAFT INTRUSION": Capitol Police Alert Staff To Evacuate... After Miscommunication With Army Parachute Team As They Dropped In On Nats Game
There were some tense moments in Washington D.C. tonight after a mass message was sent out by the Capitol Police alerting personnel that an aircraft in the area was posing a 'probable threat'.
Speculation began on Twitter as folks tried to find out answers.. Was it a drone?? A hijacked aircraft? A small, private plane acting erratically? Airborne attackers?!
And it wasn't long before aviation bubbas had the flight path & exactly what type of plane it was, and oh shit, it was circling over the Navy Yard:
But wait…. the Viking UV-18C Twin Otter 400 is… the U.S. Army Parachute Team aircraft. And they were circling the Nationals Stadium in the Navy Yard neighborhood… and it was… Military Appreciation night…
It's all coming together now.. A simple case of SNAFU & miscommunication betwixt a couple government agencies. Honestly I couldn't think of a more perfect way to kick off Military Night at the ballpark. Classic.
At the end of the day I'm glad that's all it was, and yeah sure, it's a pretty big fuck up that likely understandably scared the shit out of a good amount of people, but better safe than sorry, right? At least we know the alert system works, right?! Guys?! And it could always be worse - remember that time Hawaii told everyone a nuke was coming?
