The Simple Solution For Coaches To Stop Fucking Up Late Game Decisions - Have Them Play Video Games, Of Course
I actually ... don't hate this idea. I mean, sure, playing Madden and 2k in my recliner is slightly different than having to make a decision on the fly that could cost you your job. I would actually take it a step farther. Every coach should have a clock guy/decision guy. Someone who can tell them what to do based on time. We wouldn't see the Broncos waste 30 seconds to kick a 64-yard field goal. Everyone knew that was dumb as shit. Well everyone besides Hackett. That's why you have a video game guy on your side.
'Hey, uh, it's way easier to get 5 yards with 3 timeouts and get more yards than waste it and kick a 64-yarder.'
See that was easy.
It's not even just video gamers that get it. It's anyone who understands simple math. Analytics gets thrown around all the time and it's not even analytics. Going for it on 4th and 5 with the game on the line is simple math. Analytics is knowing to go for 2 or something like that. I say it all the time but no one is a bigger pussy while talking about how tough they are than football coaches. They preach toughness until it's a 4th and 1 from the 45. Better punt it!
Again, anyone who says playing video games is the same is dumb. That's not what we're arguing. But it's about decision making. It's about understanding time and math. That's what needs to be taught. Hell, I might start a consulting firm that teaches football coaches math. It's really not that hard. I promise.
Score one for the nerds everywhere though. Thanks, John.
