Community Is Finally Going To Be A Movie!

Get excited! We got our six seasons. Now we are getting a movie.

SOURCE - Cult hit comedy “Community,” which ran on NBC from 2009 to 2014 and aired its final season on Yahoo! Screen in 2015, is getting its own movie on Peacock, to the delight of fans. 

The movie will be helmed by original series creator Dan Harmon. Series stars Joel McHale,  Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong will return.

Last year, McHale, a producer on the “Community” movie, told The Post that the cast had been encouraged by the reaction to their “Community” virtual table read during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

While it would be fun to get to see Jeff and Abed in a theater with a bunch of other Community fans, we should be happy we are getting anything at all. It's probably not realistic for show that hasn't been on the air in seven years and that had such a small audience to get a wide cinematic release in 2022. 

I'm not terribly shocked at this news. Other than Donald Glover who wasn't mentioned in the initial press release as being involved, most of the cast have worked steadily but haven't had a breakout role. Since his CBS sitcom The Great Indoors was cancelled in 2017, Joel McHale has mostly been playing himself in various TV shows most notably The Masked Singer occasionally. Alison Brie was on GLOW on Netflix for three seasons but that was cancelled in 2019 and she recently said that show ending was the "heartbreak of her career". 

Besides Glover, Chevy Chase and Yvette Nicole Brown are not listed as being involved either. Chase, of course, left the show after saying the N-word on set and it was mutually agreed by him and the producers that he should go. His character was also killed off. 

I was more surprised to see Brown not listed. She left the show in the final season to take care of her sick father. Total speculation on my part here but she is on a Disney+ show currently called Big Shot so maybe there was a conflict somewhere because of that. By all accounts, she gets along great with the rest of the cast and took part in the virtual table read that creator Dan Harmon says was the impetus for doing the movie. Harmon will be co-writing this movie as well.

Also in the deal, Peacock is getting streaming access for the full series on a non-exclusive basis. I think this will help Peacock market the movie really effectively. I'm excited to see such a great show get a second life and some much-needed promotion. If NBCUniversal and Peacock are paying for this, hopefully that means they'll finally promote it properly. 

Finally, Daniel Glover did take part in that same virtual table read from 2020. I'm guessing we get at least one more Troy & Abed In The Morning.
