"The Greatest Race For Sergio Perez" Comes In An Extremely Wet And Chaotic Singapore Grand Prix

Alright back to F1 - Sergio Perez had a mega race for Red Bull today. There's no other way to say it. He's one of the most like-able guys in Formula 1 and he's a phenomenal teammate for Max Verstappen. Time and time again, Checo has shown his reliability and his ability to take over a race when he needs to.

This Singapore Grand Prix was delayed due to the weather as it was raining like crazy in Singapore tonight:

By the time the race started, the track was drive-able but it was still extremely wet. This caused 6 drivers to not be able to finish the race. So this grand prix was filled with safety cars left and right.

Singapore is what's known as a "street-race," so the track is extremely narrow and doesn't leave very much room for overtakes. On these tracks, drivers have to be extra careful and focused, so the dampness of the track didn't help the drivers one bit.

As you can tell from all these races updates, it was just nonstop safety cars from lap 22 - 36. One after another, after another, after another. The race ended up taking so much time that the ending up the race came down to timing instead of total laps. This happens in Formula 1 because the FIA wants the race to end within 3 hours of proposed race start time. So when the clock hits zero, you finish your lap and end the race.

The same thing happened at this year's Monaco Grand Prix.

Once we're back racing, Checo did an unbelievable job to hold off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

At this time the race stewards allowed DRS to be enabled due to the track become slightly less damp. This added an additional variable for Checo because now Charles would be gaining 15 kmp on the straights. However, Checo didn't let that phase him as he just kept staying in front of Leclerc. It was an unbelievable race effort from Checo and as the F1 broadcaster David Croft said at the races end, it was the "Greatest race for Sergio Perez."

Battling against DRS, while holding off your rival is no simple feat.

Checo's teammates Max Verstappen finished in 7th and secured 6 points towards the Driver Championship. He wasn't able to secure the Championship today, but if he finished the Japanese Grand Prix next weekend, he'll secure the Championship! Also, Leclerc needs to finish 2nd or better next weekend to keep his Championship dreams alive.
