Not Shocking: UNC Is Officially The Worst No. 1 Team In The History Of College Basketball

There it is. It's now official. UNC is the worst No. 1 team in the history of college basketball. You can't even argue it when these facts are out there. They aren't ranked after just 5 weeks. They got one vote probably because their name is UNC. There's not one reason to even consider them as a top-25 team right now. They are 5-4 with 4 losses in a row. Their best win is at Portland. They have losses to Iowa State, Alabama, Indiana and Virginia Tech. Not bad losses, but you can't lose every game - even if Bacot misses a game because of injury. 

This goes back to what I said before the season and basically every year. The AP poll is stupid but people gotta stop putting teams who get hot in March, bring everyone back and auto put them top-5. The three teams that everyone was super high on this year were UNC, TCU and Creighton for basically that reason. Creighton just lost at home to Nebraska by 10. TCU just became ranked again but they have a loss to Northwestern State. UNC is now out of the top-25 completely. 

Again, there's a reason these teams were 8 seeds a year ago. Even if they take a jump, assuming they're auto top-5 is insane. UCLA was that team last year. Went from an 11 seed to a Final Four to preseason top-3. They were a 4 seed which is an impressive jump! Basically, like anything in life, keep expectations at a minimum. 

The fact is this UNC team just isn't good right now. They can't shoot the ball. They are an average defensive team. Pete Nance isn't Brady Manek. There's no bench. That's all before the Bacot injury. Can shit get fixed? Of course. But it's why I pushed back on them as preseason No. 1. Not because I'm a hater, but because history always says to do so. 

On the flip side the poll is showing the surprise teams. Virginia is 3. Purdue is 4. UConn is 5. All teams were expected to be 'fine' this year but they all look legit top-5 good. Maryland is now top-15 and has Nate back on the bandwagon. 

It's now official though. UNC is the worst No. 1 team we've ever seen in college basketball. At least you aren't Louisville.
