Notorious Grumpy Asshole Jim Boeheim Goes Scorched Earth - Claims Wake Forest Bought A Team, College Hoops Is Awful, But He's Not Retiring
What an article to drop here on a Saturday night. A Saturday night loaded with college basketball all day and now we have Jim Boeheim going scorched Earth. It's not even logical what he's saying. I have to get ahead with that line because one of his claims is that Wake Forest bought a team this year. I'm not lying.
[Source] - "This is an awful place we're in in college basketball," he said. "Pittsburgh bought a team. OK, fine. My [big donor] talks about it, but he doesn't give anyone any money. Nothing. Not one guy. Our guys make like $20,000. Wake Forest bought a team. Miami bought a team. ... It's like, 'Really, this is where we are?' That's really where we are, and it's only going to get worse."
Forbes naturally declined the claim, because, well, Forbes is right:
Wake Forest did not buy a team. Here's a little fact for old Jimmy B. Their two transfers this year - Tyree Appleby and Andrew Carr. Appleby was a fine player at Florida. He debated going to Murray State. If that's who you're in an NIL battle with, you're not exactly landing some transfer that everyone is after. Andrew Carr? He was like the 3rd option at Delaware. That's how you buy a team, baby.
One of the most outrageous claims I can remember. Miami? Sure that's completely different. Oh and another little story for Jimmy:
Miami? Okay, that's fair. Point to Jim on that one.
It's just so outrageous that it took away from the fact he's talking about retiring.
"I have no other plans. Listen, this has been the question of the day for 15 years. This isn't a new question. It's just the calendar going, 'Well, he's 78.' It's just the calendar. If it wasn't the calendar, if I was 65, no one would be saying anything. And I'm not going to retire just because it's the calendar.
"I know it's my choice," he said. "I can do whatever I want. I just don't know for sure."
"'All these people are saying he should retire,'" he said, parroting a line from the talk show host. "Who's that? Everyone I see comes up to me and says, 'Coach, don't retire.' Where do you get that from?"
I'm sure this will sit well with every Syracuse fan. I can't think of one Syracuse fan at all that wants Boeheim to retire. They are very rational about his decision making. And I'm aware that fans are irrelevant when it comes to making a coaching decision. But it's not just the calendar, Jim. Syracuse isn't winning anymore. That's the main problem. Not your age. It has nothing to do with being 65 or 78. It has to do with missing the NCAA Tournament.
You want to bitch about the transfer portal? Fine. I get not everyone likes it from fans to coaches. But claiming Wake Forest bought a team with Tyree Appleby and Andrew Carr is one of the most asinine things I've heard in this sport. Have fun, Syracuse.
