SUM 41 Breaks Up After 27 Years Which Has Reminded Me Just How Great MTV Spring Break Was As A Kid
I personally am not a diehard Sum 41 guy in any way shape or form. I'll be honest, I was shocked they were still producing music. I knew their songs, grew up in that phase of punk rock/ emo type music that swept the nation for a short period of time. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Cartel, My Chemical Romance, Lit, New Found Glory, and Say Anything to name a few. They were the soundtracks to nights in the woods, basement house parties, or in the car via an ipod via a cassette tape. No really that was a thing.
Like I said, I saw this news and while I hadn't though about them in a while, I was humming their tune right away. "Storm into the party like my name is El Nino " is a hell of an opening line if we're being honest. Banger. More so, I vividly remembered Sum 41 performing "Fat Lip" at MTV's Spring Break.
Now if you aren't familiar with MTV's Spring Break, let me be a real old fuck here and tell you before social media, and cell phones, and even really good internet, this is what suburban kids like myself LIVED ON for a week. You came home from school and it was just on tv. I feel like they never really promoted it, it was just on, but you could never change the channel. It was electric content, especially as an 11-12 year old watching.
Read Clem's blog about all the hijinks that went on during those years.
Whip cream bikinis, dancing models, drunk college kids. I didn't even know what I was really watching but I knew it was cool, I was locked in. All time television as a young kid. ALL TIME.
The other part of Spring Break on MTV that was iconic was the musical performances. I mentioned Sum 41's performance, but it seemed like they had EVERYONE of significance at their peak for a period in time.
Look at some of these acts / names.
Musical acts in certain places always feel like a real iconic thing. For years SNL felt like it always had the big name at the right time performing of their show. For my money, you can put MTV's run during Spring Break up there with anything , and any program. Looking back it is even more impressive than I remember it. And to think these aired on TV on a fucking Tuesday at like 3:15 pm is even crazier. I know I dated myself here with this blog, but man these performances bring back such memories and what I wouldn't do to have some cookies and iced tea and sit on the couch watching this with zero responsibilities.
As always … shoutout the man Carson Daly, one of my top 5 celebrities of all time. TRL forever.
