A Trailer For A24's Documentary On Steph Curry Has Turned The Internet Into a Bloodbath Over Whether You Consider His Career An Underdog Story

Apple TV just released a trailer for their upcoming documentary on Steph Curry titled 'Underrated.' You can view the minute long tease below before reading my stupid blog. 

The result of that trailer and the name of the doc? Anarchy on the streets of the internet. As is common practice, people are in big disagreement on whether you consider Steph Curry's career an underdog story. 

The debate isn't about if he's underrated right now obviously because we're talking about someone who has become the undisputed best shooter of all time along with winning 4 rings, 2 MVPs, and a Finals MVP. Those idiots went away for good after he took down Boston in the Finals two seasons ago. Curry will go down as a top 10 player of all time in the game, and one who changed the way it's played, but the debate of his career and whether he's an underdog rages on. 

And before you say it's not a debate, go check the quote tweets or replies on any of Curry's post or A24's or Discussing Film's. 

Yeah we get it, Steph is the son of a 15 year NBA vet. He grew up in NBA gyms and was around the game from birth. Got news for ya, just because you're a nepo NBA baby doesn't mean you're gonna make the league, never mind have any success once you get there — see Marcus Jordan, David Stockton, Scottie Pippen Jr, or Luke Walton for example. Does it help that Dell Curry has surrounded Steph by some pretty good resources growing up? He wasn't underprivileged, but that doesn't mean he can't be considered underrated or an underdog. 

Did we forget that Steph didn't receive a single offer from a major D-1 school? Davidson, Winthrop and Virginia Commonwealth were all who wanted the 3 star athlete's services. What about Dell Curry's alma mater, Va Tech? Being inducted into the school's hall of fame and going onto have a long pro career wasn't enough to warrant his son a serious look. He was invited only as a walk-on to be a Hokie after they got spooked by his small frame. He was 160 pounds soaking wet who looked ridiculous wearing any basketball jersey because of how little he was. 

Next he goes to Davidson where he puts them on the map while putting up insane shooting numbers for three years. There's that incredible Elite 8 run in 2008 where we all were captivated by his wizardry. The fact is though, a ton of people average 20+ points a game in college. It sure as hell doesn't mean you're gonna stick in the NBA. 

But maybe he could ride a similar path that JJ Redick did a few years prior and be a marksman three point shooter, bounce around a bunch while carving out a 10-15pt a game career. Curry goes 7th overall in 2009 which obviously is impressive until you see who went before him. Do we realize he was passed on for both RICKY RUBIO AND JONNY FLYNN? And we're still talking about him not being underrated? Come on. 

Does everyone forget the chronic ankle injuries he dealt with early in his NBA career? For a little bit there it looked like he'd never solve em' and it would derail any success coming his way. Despite tearing up college, being Dell Curry's son, and being a top 10 pick he still wasn't being thought of as a guy who could become a perennial star. Steph underwent multiple ankle surgeries in his first few years in an attempt to correct the injury and luckily they found a solution. 

Is Steph Curry the greatest underdog story in the league? Of course not. Go read about Giannis' upbringing and how he was peddling on the streets of Greece just to make any kind of money with his brothers. Nikola Jokic was a fat boy taken in the middle of the 2nd round. Dennis Rodman's path to the NBA could and should be a movie in itself. There are levels of being an underdog, but I feel comfortable calling Curry one when you consider he was a 3 star recruit almost no one in the country wanted who went onto become the best shooter ever and one of the greatest players in the sport's history. The tag line of underdog fits for these eyes.
