Peacock's New Twisted Metal Series Looks Surprisingly Solid
Follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
As a casual fan of the games growing up, I had a lot of hesitations about this series. First of all, it just doesn't feel like a franchise that is begging for any sort of live-action adaption. It's crazy over the top and would require a MASSIVE budget to do it justice on TV. Not to mention, Twisted Metal isn't exactly 'The Last of Us' as far as name recognition…
That said, this looks like it could definitely be worse. Mackie is in his element with action-comedy and Stephanie Beatriz always works as a badass. The effects look ok (relative to the TV, which are always worse than movies) and the ICP-type characters look cool. Especially Samoa Joe. The humor was a little "well that just happened" lame millennial-ish but thats not a death sentence for something in this genre.
What has me the most optimistic, though, is that they clearly aren't pulling many punches with gore. That is huge because if they tried to PG-13 this shit it would be unwatchable. However, trailers are trailers and, like 95% of live-action video game adaptations, this will suck ass. That won't stop me from holding out hope, though. If I can make some suggestions for other old PS2 games to adapt:
- SOCOM III
- MediEvil (animated, not live action please)
- Jak & Daxter + Jak II (also animated)
- Splinter Cell
- Blitz: The League
