Sunday Night Sample - Method Man - Judgement Day

I miss blogging as much as I am normally able to. I miss writing weird little blogs that interest me like these Sunday Night Sample ones. Opening my new spot, with one more nearing construction completion has totally dominated my life the past 5-6 weeks and made it hard to get the time. But I'm making it a priority starting this week. Word is bond.

This week's Sunday Night Sample is off one of my favorite albums growing up, Method Man's Tical 2000, the title track, "Judgement Day."

METHOD MAN - JUDGEMENT DAY

Method Man was always an interesting dude, who was interested in some far out shit. He had this obsession it seemed with this dystopian future we were headed for at the time (1998) and seem to be on the cusp of now 25 years later.

The music video reflected it, as did this entire album.

Interludes (remember those) on the album were straight out of a science fiction horror film.

Including the one right before the instrumental on this track kicks in-

First there was the collapse of civilization
Anarchy, genocide, starvation
Then when it seemed like shit couldn't get any more fucked up
We got the plague
The living death
Closing his icy grip around the whole planet
Then the rumors started
The last hardcore MC's were working on a cure
That would end the pestilence. Why?
I like the death
I like the misery
I like this world!

This was actually based on the opening of the 1989 film Cyborg.

This beat has OutKast ATLiens vibes and is pure fucking fire. It was actually produced by Method Man himself along with 4th Disciple. Here's how they came up with it-

SAMPLE - Theme From Star Trekby Alexander Courage (1966)

The intro to the track takes a riff from the famous Captain Kirk line from the Star Trek intro, but it also pulls those violins and the "star twinkles" sounds you hear in as well.

SAMPLE - Say What You Want (All Day, Every Day)by Texas and Wu-Tang Clan

Those drums… You hear them? Sped up of course on Meth's track but damn do those hit and hit clean.

SAMPLE - The Wildstyleby Time Zone (1983)

That "ahhhhhhh" at the 2:14 mark. So random, so obscure. That's what makes Method Man tick though.

SAMPLE - Pump Me Upby Grandmaster Melle Mel and The Furious Five (1985)

That, "I said c'mon…..I said c'monnnn". I love when rappers will throw in lines from the artist and groups who inspired them when they were kids growing up. This one went so far over my head I only realized it once I looked up the clearance credits for the song and saw this on there. Then listened to it and when that part came on it immediately caught me ear.

Awesome fucking song off an awesome album.

Here's Meth performing "Judgement Day" live at The Apollo theatre. If you've ever seen him live you know he's one of the best rappers to ever do it.

p.s. - this album was fuckin insane. so many heaters on it. "Dangerous Grounds"

"Cradle Rock" with Left Eye

and "Break Ups 2 Make Ups" with D'Angelo
