The VMA's (Apparently Still Around) Are Making The Smart Move By Giving Shakira A Lifetime Achievement Award For Influence On Music Videos
I'm not a huge award show guy mostly because I stink at watching movies and forget they are on. That said, the VMA's were one of the most important nights we had growing up. That was also more of an MTV thing, lack of social media and everything else. You wanted to see who won music video awards from music videos you raced off the bus to win. They even had the awesome moonman trophy
Now here we are in 2023 and music videos are nonexistent. At least there's no buzz around them. You might see a clip from a new one on YouTube or something, but you don't tune in and see what boy band is number 1. You don't start the Spears vs Christina argument. So that's why this is a genius move by the VMA's.
Shakira is in the news everywhere right now. Her divorce with Pique, her rumored relationship with Lewis Hamilton or Jimmy Butler. You can't go a day without Shakira news or rumors popping up. All that to say, do we forget what she did in music videos? Let's go down the rabbit hole:
And in gif form!
Say what you want, but you're telling me that's not lifetime influence on music videos? I'm all in on Shakira winning the same award as names like The Beatles, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Beyonce, etc. Shakira music videos were must watch back in the day. Hips Don't Lie dropped in 2006. Whenever, Wherever was 2001! It's 2023 and she's still in the news. I don't care if this is an award show that nobody knows about anymore, this is a deserved award.
So congrats to Shakira. It's a long way from the Madonna-Britney-Christina kiss
But this is how you get interest back in the VMAs. I had no idea they were still on, but Shakira steals news man.
