Here Are All Of The Best Movies And Shows Coming To (HBO) Max This Month. 'Gangs of New York', 'Blade'
1. Blade - 77/100
When Blade's mother was bitten by a vampire during pregnancy, she did not know that she gave her son a special gift while dying—all the good vampire attributes in combination with the best human skills. Blade and his mentor battle an evil vampire rebel who plans to take over the outdated vampire council, capture Blade and resurrect a voracious blood god.
No, it's not a perfect. But god damn is Blade a fun time or what. Stylized gore and action. Over-the-top acting. Awesome gun and swordplay. What is not to love about that? The quick answer is the sequels, but we will just forget about those.
2. Boyz n The Hood - 94/100
Boyz n the Hood is the popular and successful film and social criticism from John Singleton about the conditions in South Central Los Angeles where teenagers are involved in gun fights and drug dealing on a daily basis.
One of the quintessential 90s movies, this is a must for those of you that haven't seen it. It is Lawrence Fishburne getting into his peak and the start of a really solid career from Cuba Gooding Jr. Great acting and drama.
3. Gangs of New York - 79/100
It's 1863. America was born in the streets. Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points of America to seek vengeance against the psychotic gangland kingpin, Bill the Butcher, who murdered his father years earlier. With an eager pickpocket by his side and a whole new army, Vallon fights his way to seek vengeance on the Butcher and restore peace in the area.
It's definitely in the bottom half of Scorsese's catalogue, but it's all relative. His worst would be 99% of directors best. All that said, this is still a good ass movie. 2 of the best actors ever in Leo and DDL duking it out with a phenomenal cast of costars.
4. Tears of the Sun - 70/100
A Special-Ops commander leads his team into the Nigerian jungle in order to rescue a doctor who will only join them if they agree to save 70 refugees too.
It ain't perfect but I must have watched this movie a thousand times on FX growing up. Good gunfights and a great, dramatic score. Well worth the watch.
5. The Mask - 74/100
When timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss discovers a magical mask containing the spirit of the Norse god Loki, his entire life changes. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy exuding charm and confidence which allows him to catch the eye of local nightclub singer Tina Carlyle. Unfortunately, under the mask's influence, Ipkiss also robs a bank, which angers junior crime lord Dorian Tyrell, whose goons get blamed for the heist.
Every now and then, we all need a goofy ass movie to reset our palate. That Mask is represents a lot of what made those 90s comedies great.
