Baker Mayfield Is A Football Savant

Baker Mayfield didn't start too hot, opening 3/11 for just 12 yards. But he finished the game strong going 18/23 for 161 yards and 2 TDs and 0 INTs. So how did things change so drastically?

Well according to Bucs star Linebacker Devin White, Baker came into the locker room at halftime and said, 

“I just remember Bake came in the locker room literally at halftime and said, ‘I got it. We got all these signals,’” White began. “We’re in there talking as an offense and he’s like, ‘I know all these signals. If they do this, they’re going into Cover-2. If they do this, they’re going into Cover-3. Every time I alert this and they do this signal, they’re dropping back to this.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ … I was just listening to him and we were listening to him and we just kind of understood.” - Sports Illustrated via the Buccaneers Radio Network

So bottom line is that Baker Mayfield is a football savant. Looking at his previous game against a Brian Flores-led defense in 2019, he had similar success going 24/34 for 327 yards 3 TDs to just 1 INT. Not only that, the guy's got swag and the team is clearly rallying around him. He clearly had some recall from that game and also broke down the Vikings signs in real-time. Truly impressive stuff. 

If that's able to continue, there is no reason this Buccaneers team can't make some real noise in the division and contend for a playoff spot.
