Bob Melvin Is Jumping Ship From San Diego To Become The Manager Of The San Francisco Giants
This is a very bizarre story to me. Bob Melvin is a manager that I've always respected. He's won everywhere he's gone. He did a great job in Oakland, helping some of those A's teams win on shoestring budgest. Several years back, when the A's were tanking, they gave him permission to interview for the Padres job. He took that role following the 2021 season, and in his first year, he helped the Padres get to the NLCS. Despite being heavy favorites to win the World Series coming into 2023, the Padres failed to make the playoffs. Now, Bob Melvin finds himself in another part of California managing the San Francisco Giants.
Melvin's job was not in jeopardy in San Diego. But the fact that they gave him permission to interview with the San Francisco Giants, makes me think that the relationship between Melvin and the front office was getting sour. What a cluster fuck the San Diego Padres are. They have so much talent, and it felt like they finally had the right guy for the job as his manager, and yet it seems like they can't get out of the wrong way. Maybe Melvin just got fed up.
We’ll see what they do in free agency, but outside of the 107-win season they had 2021, the Giants have kind of been wallowing in mediocrity for a while now. The 2021 season is looking more and more like a fluke every day. Their previous manager was Gabe Kapler, who is heavy into baseball analytics. They’re definitely shaking things up with Bob Melvin. I think he’ll do a good job if he’s given a good roster, but to me, this says more about where the San Diego Padres are as opposed to where the San Francisco Giants are.
