BREAKING: Bears Trade 2024 2nd Round Pick For Montez Sweat

Well, there it is. The Bears make a move for pending free agent defensive end, Montez Sweat. Definitely fills a need. For the 2nd straight season Ryan Poles trades a 2nd round pick for an established veteran to help fill a need instantly. Hopefully Sweat works out a lot better than Chase Claypool.

Sweat is still in his prime. He's been very productive this year. He's consistently gotten to the QB over his career. All things we also said about Yannick Ngakoue when he signed during training camp. Not that Sweat isn't better than Ngakoue, but Yannick has been such a disaster that Poles felt the need to move on to place B or C or D and make a midseason trade for a team going nowhere fast.

It's just so hard to be excited about anything. Improved the roster today...good. Does this trade get them any closer to being a good football team? Probably not.

Here's hoping this was all some sort of grand plan. The Bears still have a ton of cap space. The market for DEs wasn't great this past offseason so Poles waited. He obviously HAS to sign Sweat long term. I think a 2nd round pick sounds like a steep price for a guy you need to sign and theoretically could've signed in the off-season without giving up a high pick to do so. Danielle Hunter and Brian Burns are supposed to be free agents next summer with Sweat. There's a handful more edge becoming available too.

I would love to know what the plan is because so far it hasn't produced any results and hasn't been exactly coherent. Sweat is definitely a 4-3 edge. System fit for Eberflus. Does that mean that Eberflus is safe next year too? If that is the case...yikes.
