The Trailer For "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" Bothered The Hell Out Of Me

I don't have a huge attachment to the "Ghostbusters" franchise. I really liked the first movie, and I thought that "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" had its merits, though it completely fell apart in the third act. The trailer came out yesterday for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" (what an awful title). Look, I hope it's good. I like everybody in it. It's always easy to root for Paul Rudd, but this trailer has really bothered me for some reason, and I want to explain why.

This is a huge problem with cinema today. Because we have nostalgic goggles on about everything, we live under this impression that things that were just cool are somehow also really important and epic. The first "Ghostbusters" is an awesome movie. But that's all it is. It's just a funny comedy from the 80s featuring four really funny guys. Now it's EPIC! It's IMPORTANT! It's HUUUUUUGE! It makes me wonder what kind of comedies they will give this treatment in the future. Are we going to get a "Hangover 4" where Bradley Cooper and his friends pass the torch along to their children as they celebrate a bachelor party in Vegas? Oh shit, I just gave Hollywood an idea, didn't I?

I've been pretty outspoken that I'm not crazy about what's become of the "Star Wars" universe, but "Star Wars" was always an epic story, so I understand why fans are so genuine with their passion. I'm not saying that the female "Ghostbusters" movie is a good movie, but I've seen less harsh responses to war crimes. This alternative is probably better, but also shows a misunderstanding of what made the first "Ghostbusters" good.

You know how much of a curmudgeon I can be when it comes to that stuff. I hope the movie is good. I do think the people behind it are talented, but I feel like there's a missed opportunity here. We talk all the time about how there aren't genuine comedy movies anymore. "Ghostbusters" would be a perfect lane for that. It sucks that we've gotten away from what made the original awesome.
